Outrage! Wilders denied entry in the U.K.
A defiant Geert Wilders flew to London’s Heathrow airport today and in 47 seconds was ejected by British immigration authorities, his passport taken away and thrown into detention. The flight from Amsterdam was filled with Dutch TV and press media.
"I am in a detention centre at Heathrow," Wilders told
The Times. "They took my passport. I will not be allowed to enter the country. They will send me back within a few hours.”
Wilders has denounced the British Government as "the biggest bunch of cowards in Europe. They are more Chamberlain than Churchill. I was invited by another politician (Lord Pearson of Rannoch). I am a democrat; I am serving freedom of speech. They are not only being nasty to me they are being nasty to freedom of speech."
Wilders has received hundreds of messages of support from Britons who disagree with their government’s decision. Polls on the
Daily Mail and
Guardian websites both show an overwhelming majority of voters opposing the ban.
Our sources tell us that the House of Lords has shown Wilders film “Fitna,” notwithstanding his absence. They will be holding a press conference shortly. Lord Pearson and Baroness Cox who co-sponsored Wilders appearance are clearly upset about the obduracy of the Gordon Brown government in the face of withering criticism over the issue of freedom of speech.
Glenn Beck on FoxNews had been set up to interview Wilders in a London studio. Clearly, that has been precluded by today’s British Home office actions at Heathrow. Wilders' speech that would have been given at the House of Lords will be issued later today.
Next, Wilders is scheduled to present “Fitna” before a gathering of the Italian Senate in Rome.
During the week of February 23rd, Wilders is scheduled to be in the U.S. Given what happened in London this afternoon, will the Obama administration consider denying Wilders entry, or will it honor free speech guarantees under our First Amendment? We hope that Wilders can come to America. He has become both a lightening rod and an international icon in the fight for free speech, which is increasingly threatened by Muslim intimidation across the globe.
