Understanding the other guy's mind. What Dershowitz doesn't know about honour/shame

I published something at Israellycool today that at first glance is light hearted but has a very serious point.

Alan Dershowitz says he sent a copy of the Curb Your Enthusiasm "Palestinian Chicken" episode to Bibi with a suggestion that he invite Abbas over to watch it and have a laugh together. Among other messages including the inevitable "why can't we all just get along" the episode features Larry David having wild sex with a Palestinian Arab who calls him a filthy Jew.

The point of my post is that if Dershowitz doesn't know enough about Arab honour and shame culture and the deep humiliation of having an Arab woman have sex with this ugly little Jew, he really either doesn't know anything about our enemies or he doesn't have the mental acuity to realise that other people don't think the same way he does. Its really a very serious issue and typifies the problem we have with peace processors failing to understand how fundamentally different the other side is.

Grumpy Abbas

…. and why peace in Israel is further away than ever.

I just saw Dave’s amazing post about Alan Dershowitz and the Palestinian Chicken episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Dave highlights the following from an interview with Dershowitz:

And if you want to ask me what my favorite Larry David episode is…it’s “Palestinian Chicken.” And let me tell you this: I recently sent a copy of “Palestinian Chicken,” that Larry David gave me, to Prime Minister Netanyahu—with the suggestion that he invite Abbas over to watch it together. And maybe if they both get a good laugh, they can begin a negotiating process.

Well, Mr Dershowitz, let me tell you this: on a scale of 1 to 5 where 5 is the most offensive thing you can show a Muslim and burning a Koran is probably a 4, that episode scores 33.

If Mr Dershowitz knew anything about Arab cultures of honour and shame he’d know that a balding, unatractive Jewish man having sex with a good looking, proud Palestinian Arab woman is deeply offensive. Many hundreds of women have been MURDERED by their families for having sex out of wedlock with Arab men, let alone a Jew!

The idea that Abbas could find this TV show funny, or could even acknowledge watching it, shows how little Dershowitz truly knows about our supposed “peace partner”. And if Dershowitz does not understand the most fundamental aspects of the character of our enemies, how can we take anything he says about making peace with them seriously?

You have to look at the world through the other guy’s eyes or you’ll never understand why he acts the way he does. And if you think that a Jew having sex with a Palestinian woman can be seen as anything other than the most base humiliation by a Palestinian, you clearly can’t do that.

(Note: I’m not talking about Islam specifically because these traits appear in Christian and other non-Muslim Arabs, but the internal restrictions that stop people murdering their children or siblings are weakest in Islam which is why these kinds of murders occur vastly more often in Muslim families and society.)
