Henry Allingham dies
First World War veteran Henry Allingham – who last month officially became the world's oldest man – has died at the age of 113.
Mr Allingham died in his sleep at 3.10am on Saturday at his care home near Brighton, after a life that saw him marked out as a national treasure. He was one of the last three surviving British veterans of the First World War.
He was also the last surviving founder member of the RAF, the last man to have witnessed the Battle of Jutland and the last surviving member of the Royal Naval Air Service.
He jokingly attributed his longevity to "cigarettes, whisky and wild, wild women".
Mr Allingham, who became a familiar face at Remembrance ceremonies, was born in Clapton, East London, in 1896.
After his father's death he was brought up by his mother, who persuaded him not to join up as soon as war broke out. When she died in 1915 he enlisted, serving first as a seaplane mechanic and then as a spotter, or bomber.
He later confessed that he did not realise what war meant when he signed up, but his experiences at the Third Battle of Ypres, widely known as Passchendaele, resulted in his naïve enthusiasm for battle and glory that gave way to a passion for peace.
Mr Allingham and his wife Dorothy were together for more than 50 years, living to see his first great-great-great-grandchild. After the war he went into the motor industry, eventually joining the design department at Ford before retiring in 1961.
Since April 2006, Mr Allingham, who lost his sight as a result of macular degeneration, had been cared for by St Dunstan's, the charity providing support for visually impaired ex-Service men and women, at its centre in Ovingdean, near Brighton.
Robert Leader, chief executive of St Dunstan's, said: "Everybody at St Dunstan's is saddened by Henry's loss and our sympathy goes out to his family. He was very active right up to his final days, having recently celebrated his 113th birthday on HMS President surrounded by family".
At the Last Voices of a Generation Remembrance Ceremony last year we in the crowd wondered what was delaying the start of the two minutes silence scheduled for 11.00. It was Mr Allingham determined to rise from his chair to walk and lay his wreath personally. In the end he allowed the Bishop to hand the wreath to his escorts.
I have his autobiography to read when I have finished rereading the Forsyte Saga - I expect to start it on holiday next month. We were both born in Clapton, Hackney. Him at the posh end, Upper Clapton, me in the maternity hospital in Lower Clapton which wasn't even built until he was in his 30s. And which is now flats.
One of the most significant things about the three veterans of that day is that all of them had long and happy marriages.

Christian teacher tells of race slurs by pupils aged 8
From The Daily Mail.
The school deny the teachers claims and say that he was sacked for shouting at the children (thats the chop for most teachers of my acquaintance then) but I agree with the comments that his story has the ring of truth.
A teacher claims he has been sacked for reprimanding pupils who made racist remarks about his being a Christian.
Nicholas Kafouris said . . . he would not tolerate the 'openly racist' behaviour of pupils as young as eight.
Greek-born Mr Kafouris, 40, taught for more than ten years at Bigland Green Primary in Tower Hamlets, East London, where according to the most recent Ofsted report 'almost all' the 465 pupils are from ethnic minorities and a vast proportion do not speak English as a first language.
He is taking the school, its headmistress and assistant head to an employment tribunal where he will claim he was forced out after highlighting the rise in racism among pupils.
In 2006, said Mr Kafouris, he brushed against a boy while giving him a book.
'He said rather brusquely to me, "Don't touch me, you're a Christian". I found this very offensive.'
Later that year, he said children aged eight and nine in his class praised the suicide bombers in the 9/11 attacks.
'In late November and December 2006, many various unacceptable and openly racist, anti-Semitic and anti-Christian remarks were being made by many and various children in Year 4,' he said.
'These included, "We want to be Islamic bombers when we grow up", "the Twin Towers bombers are heroes and martyrs", "we hate the Jews" and "we hate the Christians".'
And in January 2007, he claims some pupils 'expressed delight' that a child had died when a wall collapsed on him in London. When asked why, he said one of the children replied: 'Because he's English.' The following month, during a religious education lesson about Jonah and the whale, he claims one of the pupils asked if Jonah was a Jew, before shouting: 'I hate the Jews, they're our enemies.'
Mr Kafouris says he completed 'Racist Incident Reporting Sheets' and notified headmistress Jill Hankey in writing about each incident. But he claims his concerns were ignored because she wanted to maintain the school's 'good' Ofsted rating.
Mr Kafouris, who is unmarried and has no children, was also reprimanded for handling a discussion about religion with a child 'inappropriately', which he denies.
He says assistant head Margaret Coleman accused him of shouting at pupils and telling them Muslims had produced suicide bombers - claims he rejects.
'I believe after I complained to the head about the racist and religious discrimination incidents, I suffered victimisation,' he says. 'I also suffered less favourable treatment and incurred harassment by the head and assistant head".
Mr Kafouris says the way he was treated brought on stress and depression, and that he was forced to take time off work. He was finally dismissed because of his absence, on April 30 this year.
A spokesman for Tower Hamlets Council, on behalf of the school, said: 'The governing body stands by its decision and we believe all the correct procedures were followed.'
Knowing the everyday currency of anti Jewish and anti Christian insults bandied about the East End these days, as I said above, this has the ring of truth.

The Jihad fanatic peddling a message of hate to 11-year-old Londoners (funded by the taxpayer)
If I were Anjem Choudary I would be relieved to know that my stalker was only the Daily Mail. Here they are again, on the continuing subject of his dawa to the unwary. Its dirty work, keeping tabs on Choudary but someone's got to do it.
But there is nothing harmless about what is really going on here. For the man with the microphone is Anjem Choudary, branded the most dangerous man in Britain.
An extremist who believes his sole-calling is to wage holy war against Britain and her 'infidel' allies, he is trying - and succeeding - to prepare the ground for his global Islamic jihad.
Funded by the taxpayer - he claims benefits so that he has plenty of free time to spread his message - Choudary is openly staging these 'Islamic roadshows' across Britain. And their aim is to recruit young British men prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for his chilling cause.
Read it all here.

Modernists in Medieval Clothing
From Fatwa to Jihad: The Rushdie Affair and Its Legacy, by Kenan Malik (Atlantic Books, $39.95)
What is the cause of Islamic fundamentalism and Islamist violence, and why do a few people become suicide bombers? These are the urgent questions that Kenan Malik, a respected and intelligent British journalist of Muslim origin but secular convictions, sets out to answer in From Fatwa to Jihad. It would be simplistic to ascribe the violence to Islam itself by citing those verses from the Koran that seem to justify or even require it. Selective quotation does not explain why extremism is the province of the young, and why, for example, the first generation of Muslim immigrants to Britain (and elsewhere) were not at all attracted to it.

Tariq Ramadan "lap dog to Muslim Brotherhood" wins US Appeals Court decision
Professor Tariq Ramadan, Swiss citizen and grandson of Muslim Brotherhood founder, Hassan al Banna won a reversal yesterday by the US Second Circuit Court in Manhattan of a lower court decision barring his entry to the US to take up a tenured position at the University of Notre Dame’s Kroc Center for International Peace studies in South Bend Indiana. The ACLU and other allies on the academic left in America mounted a legal defense to lift the bar against his Visa preventing him coming to the US. The State Department barred Ramadan from entry in 2004, in large measure, because he had written a check for $1,336 to a charity affiliated with Hamas, a designated foreign terrorist organization. In the interim, Ramadan is the author of “Radical Reform: Islamic Ethics and Liberation” and other works extolling the doctrine of European Islam, a code word for the Islamization of Eurabia.
Nidra Poller, ex-Pat American writer in Paris, wrote me this morning with this trenchant comment: “not that particularly to lapdogs to the Muslim Brotherhood! Is there no limit?”
My colleague at the New English Review, Rebecca Bynum, noted this in her Iconoclast post on this mind numbing court decision:
Professor Ramadan had said in an affidavit that he was not aware of any connections between the charity, Association de Secours Palestinien, and terrorism, and that he believed the organization was involved in legitimate humanitarian projects.
In its ruling on Friday, a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit held unanimously that the government was required to “confront Ramadan with the allegation against him and afford him the subsequent opportunity to demonstrate by clear and convincing evidence that he did not know, and reasonably should not have known, that the recipient of his contributions was a terrorist organization.”
Do we assume that Judge Sotomayor, presently going through US Senate Confirmation hearings, participated in this ruling? Ramadan knew what he was doing when he wrote the check to Hamas. After all he’s the grandson of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Hassan al Banna, of which Hamas is an affiliate. Then there were the thousands of taped Friday sermons distributed by the Islamist publishing house ,Tawhid, that this taqiyyah artist flooded French Mosques with Muslim Brotherhood hate cant and rhetoric. This is a travesty of justice. Now, we suppose that Ramadan can travel to the US and take up physically his tenured position at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana and send the same Muslim Brotherhood tapes to radical Mosques, here.
Ramadan and his ‘double speak”about the Muslim Brotherhood had been exposed in a book, “Brother Tariq: The Doublespeak of Tariq Ramadan” by author Caroline Fourest. Fourest noted this about Ramadan:
When speaking to a Muslim audience, in particular young Muslim under his guidance, Tariq Ramdan, never criticizes Hassan al-Banna or the Muslim Brotherhood in any way. He does, of course, emphasize certain aspects, but he remains true to the doctrine of the Brotherhood and the Brotherhood leader is clearly identified as the model to be imitated….Far from expressing any reservations about the fanaticism that is an integral part of Al-Banna’s ideology, he accuses those who point out the unsavory aspects of his political and family heritage of conspiracy and post-colonial racism.

Anti-Zionist Irish4Palestine blog Cartoon
When we posted “ZStreet is launched”, " the new Zionist kid on the block,“ we weren’t prepared for the global reaction. Lori Lowenthal Marcus in a Zstreet blog post noted:
Our official launch was Monday afternoon and already we've been welcomed warmly by organizations on the "right," attacked by the patheticos on the left, and even the centrists have begun talking about us.
Thousands of people have already visited our site (http://ziostreet.wordpress.com) or requested to join our Facebook page. People have already joined from as far away as Australia, England and Israel, and we have members in Utah, California, Illinois, South Carolina, NY, NJ, Ct, MA, PA, Florida and Wahington D.C.
We're not afraid to take on the grotesquely monied organizations on the left. If you share our principles, check us out and join on. Stop complaining that the Jews are a lost cause because Obama has given us his back and most of the Jews gave him their votes. Do something about it. Join! Don't wait. Do it now.
Marcus noted in her blog post, that the JTA had also picked up the story under the headline, “And now we have Z Street.” JTA writer Fingerhut noted:
Can there ever be too many pro-Israel organizations? Apparently not.
The latest is Z Street, which from its name appears to be a response to J Street (which, of course, was itself a response to many of the traditional mainstream pro-Israel groups).
The organization is already planning a rally in front of the White House on Oct. 27, which is the same week that J Street, joined by 11 other progressive ‘pro-Israel’ groups, is holding its first annual conference.
The day before this JTA blog post on ZStreet, Fingerhut had a major article on JStreet, “J Street conference demonstrates increased coordination on left.” In it Fingerhut profiles the JStreet agenda for the October conference:
Left-wing advocates of a two-state solution and a greater U.S. role in the peace process are joining forces in support of what they hope will be a groundbreaking conference this October in Washington.
The conference, set for Oct. 25-28, is being dubbed as J Street's first national convention, but 11 other groups have signed on as “participating organizations,” including Ameinu, Americans for Peace Now, the Israel Policy Forum, the New Israel Fund and Brit Tzedek v'Shalom.
The plan is for these other organizations to help promote and recruit for the event, in addition to having input on the program and helping to “shape the conference,” said J Street chief of staff Rachel Lerner.
The push for greater cooperation comes as many organizations on the Jewish left are reveling in what they view as a major shift in Washington, with the White House and members of Congress endorsing some of the policy prescriptions that they've been backing for years.
In particular, several of the organizations involved in the upcoming conference have been offering strong public support for the Obama administration's push for an Israeli settlement freeze. Two of the groups -- J Street and Americans for Peace Now -- found themselves on the list of 14 organizations invited to Monday's meeting in the White House with the president.
Some lawmakers and congressional staffers say that the increased profile of liberal groups is starting to have an impact on Capitol Hill. One staffer said that while there have always been members of Congress who have been on the left side of the pro-Israel spectrum, now those lawmakers have “a safe place” to remain “pro-Israel” while openly discussing more sensitive issues like the humanitarian crises in Gaza and the failure to establish a Palestinian state.
J Street’s executive director, Jeremy Ben-Ami, said that one of the goals of the conference was to show people in Washington that it “isn’t just 10 people gathering in a basement” who support these views. Similarly, he added, the conference will give the participants a chance to “look and see each other and feel less like lone voices in the wilderness.”
But then there was this response from virulently pro-Palestinian blog Irish4Palestine in a diatribe entitled: “Jew Wars-Zionists in Attack mode”:
All this Irish-Catholic Atheist can say, is "Oye Vey"
What have we here folks? A new Ass Whooping Right Wing Neo-Con nutjob racist Zionist Jihadist group emerging to “challenge” the Pro-Peace Progressive Left group J-Street. Yes, we are witnessing “Jew Wars” with the emergence of J-Street, now the Zio-Jihadists are none too happy that J-Street is having much success with their more rational policies which include; negotiations, not war, returning stolen land for peace, no war on Iran, and a whole host of other rational starting positions. Nah, can’t have that now can we? Gotta get rid of all those "Self Hating" rational Jews who may influence Washington. So, somewhere in a closet, behind white robes with pointy little hats, a shadowy group of two decide to take J-Street on, and have “organised” just last week, when they came out of the closet to sign up for a free wordpress blog.
In a conference call with co-founders Marcus, Allyson Rowen-Taylor and ‘warrior rabbi,” Jon Hausman, we characterized ZStreet as the 21st Century version of the 1940’s “Bergson Boys” (and girls in this case). The Bergson Group took on the task of rousing Zionism among the American public. They did this through pageants, front page ads in major Hearst newspapers, protests by Rabbis in Washington culminating in Congressional resolutions about saving the remnant of European Jewry from destruction in the Holocaust. All this in the face of objections raised by mainstream Jewish groups in America , the labor Zionist leadership in Palestine and the FDR White House. ZStreet, if properly supported, could become the equivalent of a Palmach (strike force in Hebrew formed by the pre-state Haganah) to lead the pro-Zionist effort against anti-Zionist J street and its allies at the October Washington conference.
Either way, the ZStreet launch this week challenged the anti-Zionist liberal left wing among American Jewish groups and stirred things up among the international Israel bashing contingent. We consider ZStreet a laudatory effort. Let’s keep those emails and blog hits on their web site coming. ZStreet co-founders, Marcus and Rowen-Taylor will need a lot of help from supporters to set the record straight about the Zionist commitment.
