The Oeuvre of David Littman
The Oeuvre of David Littman
By Guy Miliere
Translated and edited from the French and published April 1, 2012 in Dreuz.info.
David Littman, a man I deeply value is afflicted with a dread disease. I promised a long article on his work, and it is the least we can do, really the least because his work, in every sense of the term, is important. I owe him much. We owe so much more to him than we can imagine.
He stayed for years, out of modesty, in the shadow of his wife, the great talented Islamic scholar Bat Ye'or. But he has accomplished much on his own.
As a humanitarian, he has with immense courage, risked his life, helping Jews facing very difficult situations to escape, survive, and achieve freedom and dignity. He led an organization called Work to Save the Children in North Africa and the legendary Operation Mural the subject of a film by Yehuda Kaveh, released in 2007.
Watch this You Tube video of a clip from the Operation Mural documentary featuring Littman shown at the San Francisco Fim Festival.
He founded with his wife, the Center for Information and Documentation on the Middle East in Geneva in 1970. He acted tirelessly, with enthusiasm, tenacity and intelligence given every opportunity, to address the worst monstrosities emanating from a grotesque institution, the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. since replaced by the equally grotesque United Nations Council for Human Rights.
He has published, with Paul Fenton, a book called Exile in the Maghreb, the Jewish Condition under Islam. This is one of the major references on the subject. It speaks so scrupulously and detailed about the "legal and social status of Jews in Islamic Maghreb between the Middle Ages and the era of French colonization." It contains translated excerpts and annotated historical chronicles in Arabic and Hebrew, Muslim theological texts, eyewitness accounts written by European travelers - prisoners, diplomats, doctors, clerics, and adventurers. This is the kind of book you read and to which you constantly return when you need details and accurate sources.
It is, above all, a work that constitutes a final and conclusive answer to the legend so widespread of a peaceful and fraternal coexistence between Jews and Muslims in Islamic lands. Page after page is a succession of damning stories of harassment, humiliation, and violence.
We understand, through the text, why the arrival of France in North Africa was seen as their deliverance by the Jewish communities.
It is understood that the subjugation of Jews in the lands of Islam and Muslim antisemitism have a deeply rooted existence.
We better understand the Muslim anti-Semitism as it exists today and how it has spread in Europe with the consequences we have seen.
For this book alone David Littman has made more than a contribution to history: a crucial and indispensable tool for those who struggle against the lies and for the dignity of human beings. He is to be thanked. We hope he finds in these words my personal thanks and the testimony of my gratitude.
Breitbart: Obama Administration Pins Oil Spike on Israel
Israeli PM Netanyahu & President Obama
Breitbart.com has a fresh report based on a World Tribune article with comments attributed to Robert Satloff of the respected Washington Institute for Near East Policy that Israeli officials informed him the Obama Administraton is blaming Israel for the spike in oil prices. this comes in the wake of disclosure about a purposeful disinformation campaign and leaking of alleged secret intelligence on Israeli war plans for a possible pre-emptive strike against Iran's nuclear facilities. In our Iconoclast post on this topic, we suggested that the combined impact of the alleged Israeli intelligence leaking and now this revelation will likely make Israel into an important wedge issue in the 2012 Presidential campaign. The White House can't control the roiling oil markets. Based on this report, it appears to be resorting to blaming all of the runup in oil prices and gas pump sticker shock on rumored plans by Israel to execute a possible attack on Iran's nuclear program before the November 2012 election. Polls of Americans indicate both strong support for Israel and its soveregin right to defend itself against the anihilationist nuclear threat from Tehran.
The World Tribune reported yesterday that Robert Satloff, executive director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, spoke with Israeli officials. They told him that the Obama administration was blaming Israel for the spike in crude oil prices currently hurting President Obama in the polls.
Members of the Israeli government were also deeply disturbed by the Obama administration’s repeated leaking of information intended to stop Israel from attacking Iran. “I cannot underscore how deep and visceral the [Israeli] comments of the leaking that come out of Washington were,” said Satloff.
Late last month, Foreign Policy published an article suggesting that Israel had worked out a deal with Azerbaijan to provide airbases in case of an Israeli strike on Iran. “The United States is leaking information to the media in order to avert an Israeli strike in Iran,” said Israeli military analyst Ron Ben-Yishai.
That was not the first time the Obama administration had leaked information that harmed Israel. Back in 2010, a “defense” source leaked that Israel had worked out a deal with Saudi Arabia to use Saudi airspace for an attack on Iran. A few months ago, Leon Panetta suggested that Israel was planning to attack Iran in April, May or June. Another plan; another blown secret by the Obama administration.
The Obama agenda is obvious here: they want to stop Israel from striking Iran before the election, and they want to lower the price of oil. They only way to do both is to leak Israeli secrets and then blame Israel for the spike in oil prices to appease the OPEC countries. And that's precisely what the Obama administration is doing.
A Legislator Goes to Israel: Rep. Alan Clemmons of South Carolina
by Stuart Kaufman
South Carolina State. Rep. Al Clemmons of Myrtle Beach is the author of the Israel resolution that uanimously passed the 2011 the Legislative Session in Columbia, South Carolina. The resolution was entitled "To commend the nation of Israel for its relations with the United States of America and with the State of South Carolina ". It was a prototype of the one that passed unanimously in the 2012 Florida legislative session, see our Iconoclast post, here. TUW Florida members actively lobbied in Tallahassee for the Florida Stands with Israel Resolution. The author of this article, Stuart Kaufman is a valued colleague in TUW and a Zionist watcher on the ramparts who accompanied Clemmons on his first trip to Israel. Kaufman has traveled to Israel innyumerable times and has relatives there.
Israeli PM Netanyahu & S.C. State Rep. Alan Clemmons
Last Spring, President Obama made a speech in which, among other things, he stated that “the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines.” This infuriated Alan Clemmons, a Bible-believing Christian who represents Myrtle Beach in the South Carolina House of Representatives. By the next day Clemmons’ ire was still fully fueled so “in order to quiet his demons” he sat down to write a Resolution for introduction in the South Carolina House. The Resolution stated that:
“…the members of this body support Israel in their natural and God-given right of self-governance and self-defense upon their own lands, recognizing that Israel is neither an attacking force nor an occupier of the lands of others, and that peace can be afforded the region only through a united Israel governed under one law for all people.”
When he placed the Resolution in the legislative hopper, Clemmons expected opposition from those who supported President Obama. He was looking forward to the opportunity for a debate. Instead, Clemmons was deluged with requests from legislators that they be listed as co-sponsors and, without objection, all 124 members of the South Carolina House of Representatives passed the resolution unanimously.
When I read of this, I emailed Rep. Clemmons to thank him – especially in light of the fact that Myrtle Beach is not exactly known as a center of Jewish life, and Clemmons had nothing to gain by introducing the Resolution. In my email, I mentioned that my wife and I had just purchased a home in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and that as a result of his and the House’s action, I was already proud to be a South Carolinian. Alan replied to the email, which then became an ongoing correspondence resulting in a close long distance friendship. During the course of our correspondence I invited Alan to come to Israel with me, and he replied by saying that I should be careful what I ask, because he might agree. Whereupon, I re-issued my invitation, which he immediately accepted.
Shortly thereafter, purely by coincidence (or by act of G-d; I will leave it to the reader to decide), a group of political activists led by American Christian broadcaster and friend of Israel, Earl Cox, invited Alan to go to Israel with them, and Alan responded that he had already decided to go with me, and if we could synchronize our dates, he would be happy to prolong his. We worked out the dates, and the adventure began.
I contacted Caroline Glick, the formidable columnist for the Jerusalem Post, to ask for assistance in arranging meetings with members of the government. Caroline was swamped, but she referred me to Ruth Lieberman of Jaffe Strategies, a political and public relations consulting firm based in Jerusalem. Ruth, in turn, brought in Elie Pieprz (a terrific young man who moved his young family to Israel last year) to do the legwork. The result was a trip that I know Alan will remember for the rest of his life. As for me, I have been to Israel innumerable times since my first visit in 1965, but seeing Israel through Alan’s eyes opened my own eyes and enabled me to connect with Israel on an even greater emotional and intellectual level.
Elie arranged a series of tours and we received invitations for meetings with government and civic leaders.
These came together to provide Alan (and me) with an invaluable education. We toured Judea and Samaria, and saw absolute evidence of why, if Israel were forced to abandon those areas, which are the biblical heart of Jewish existence, it would mean the end of the State of Israel.
We started out the first day by visiting a place called “King Hussein’s Palace.” This was the site that had been appropriated by King Hussein of Jordan prior to 1967 for his summer palace. The foundations and superstructure had already been built when the 1967 war ended Hussein’s summer plans (it was also the site of the palace of King Saul, the first King of Israel). From that site one has a 360° view of Jerusalem’s environs, across the Judean desert and to the mountains of Jordan. It became all too clear that if the ‘Palestinians’ are permitted to continue their illegal building activities, they will carve out a corridor from Jerusalem straight down to Bethlehem, providing a free fire area for attacks on the center of Israel.
We then met with Jerusalem’s Deputy Mayor, Naomi Tsur, and Alan began the process with her of establishing a formal corresponding relationship between the two 'Holy Cities' of Jerusalem, Israel and Charleston, South Carolina (Charleston is known as the “Holy City” because of its skyline of impressive church steeples).
S.C. Rep. Clemmons at Knesset with Speaker Danny Danon
Later that morning Alan responded to an invitation issued by the Deputy Speaker of the Knesset, Danny Danon, to address the Knesset (Parliament) Caucus Against Anti-semitism that was convening that day.
This kind of “coincidence” typified the entire trip. It was as if we had an angelic tour organizer making sure that things fell perfectly into place (Elie was very good… but not THAT good!).
The rest of that day was spent in meeting with various members of the Israeli Knesset, each of whom, referring to Alan’s Resolution separately said: “zeh mitchamem et libi” (this warms my heart), which was the theme during our entire trip. The Israelis, who have unfortunately become accustomed to receiving the cold shoulder from American officials, were universally overwhelmed by the fact that they had received such strong support from such an unexpected quarter.
S.C. Rep. Clemmons, Stuart Kaufman and Mayor Ron Nachman of Ariel
We went to the new town of Ariel, in Samaria (Shomron), and met with Mayor Ron Nachmann, one of the most dynamic people I have ever met, and the human functional equivalent of a Caterpillar D11 bulldozer.
S.C. Rep. Clemmons with Efrat mayor Oded Ravivi
Nachmann created Ariel and still runs it after 30 years. Ariel is a modern, lovely place that has a spectacular center for the performing arts that would be the envy of any town in the United States. We visited vineyards and olive oil factories that produce some of the finest in the world. We visited the town of Efrat in Judea, where we met with Mayor Oded Ravivi and with Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, the visionary who conceived of Efrat, and built it into the lovely town that it is today.
S.C. Rep. Clemmons with Nadia Matar at Netzer
We visited Netzer, where we met Nadia Matar, one of the truly great heroines of Israel today.
Matar is a one-person defender of the Land of Israel from those who want to rip away Israel’s soul and core. Her current project is to create ‘facts on the ground.’ The Arabs are illegally planting on land that belongs to no one. Once the land is tilled, it is accepted as theirs. So, Matar and her volunteers are doing the same thing. They are planting trees, preserving that land for Israel.
This sometimes results in… arguments. But Nadia Matar never backs down, not from the Arabs, nor from the Israeli government. To my mind, she is the modern equivalent of the biblical heroine Deborah: fierce and unbending in order to protect the land.
I have one embarrassing fact to relate. When we were introduced, I did not realize that this Nadia was, in fact, THE Nadia Matar, whom I have admired for years. I did not learn whom she was until after we had left. Upon reflection, I confess that it was probably better that way since, had I known, I might have fallen down at her feet mumbling “I’m not worthy, I’m not worthy.” She is just that admirable.
We also had the opportunity to visit significant historic sites. We of course visited the Western Wall, the tunnel by the Temple Mount, and the City of David. Each of those places seemed to affect Alan to his very core. They peeled back the layers of his belief and exposed the essence of his faith. I believe that he became personally involved in his faith in a way that is impossible without visiting and experiencing these places.
We also visited Masada, the spectacular mountain where King Herod built his summer palace, and where, following the destruction of the Second Temple, Jewish fighters killed their wives and children and then committed suicide rather than surrender to the Tenth Roman Legion under General Flavius Silva (Peter O’Toole, in the movie). This is a common tourist destination, but here too something special happened to Alan. We encountered a group of young Israeli soldiers who were members of the Sayeret Golani (Special Forces). We fell into conversation with their Sergeant, who turned out to be from Elizabeth, NJ.
Rep. Clemmons on Masada with "Sgt. Mike" Rep. Clemmons on Masada with Golani Sayeret
of Golani Sayeret from Elizabeth, NJ
“Sergeant Mike” invited Alan to address his soldiers. Another speech!!!!! Alan was thrilled. As Alan addressed these young soldiers, and told them of his Resolution, of the fact that it had passed the legislature unanimously in the face of President Obama’s insults to the State of Israel, and that the Resolution is now in the process of being introduced in other state legislatures all over the country, their faces broke into huge smiles. They then began cheering him, and each of them wanted to shake his hand and to thank him. It was an astonishing and elating moment.
Rep. Clemmons at Megiddo
One other historic site that we visited bears mention. I took Alan to Megiddo. Not many people recognize that name, but most recognize the name “Armageddon,” which is a distortion of the Hebrew “Har Megiddo” (mount of Megiddo). This place is a fortress at the top of a mountain that sits astride the crossroads of the ancient world. Every conqueror (or would-be conqueror) of the ancient world coming from the North or the East had to pass under Megiddo to get to the Mediterranean and to Mesopotamia. King Solomon and King Ahab (the husband of Jezebel) built huge stables for their cavalries and chariots at the top of the mountain. Alan roamed the top of the mound, looking at and touching the very troughs from which the horses of Solomon and Ahab fed and drank, and as a horseman himself, one could see his imagination painting pictures in his head. It was profound to watch him.
Rep. Clemmons with Stuart Kaufman and Israeli relatives
Finally, I took Alan to meet my family and my wife’s family. Both of these families, generally, have opposite political and religious views. But they are all passionate about Israel, and grateful for the lives that they have been able to build there. I think that Alan gained great insight by meeting them and seeing how confident, happy and strong they are.
Stuart Kaufman and S.C. Rep. Alan Clemmons
What began as a spur-of-the-moment invitation evolved into an experience that will live with me for the rest of my life. I am confident that it had the same impact on Alan Clemmons, and I can’t wait until our next trip to Israel together.
Stuart Kaufman is a retired lawyer, investment banker and businessman. He is currently Coordinator of New York Operations for The United West, and is one of the founders of the National Conference On Jewish Affairs
Charles Jacobs, President of APT in an accompanying news release drew attention to the problems with the Holocaust Awareness Program with members of the faculty and speakers demonizing Israel:
Northeastern is a popular and respected school, but there does exist a problem - mostly confined to a few anti-Israel radicals among the professoriate and the administration. These individuals have used a chair donated for the purpose of teaching students about the genocide of European Jews to demonize and delegitimize the state of Israel and its supporters.
It is extraordinarily unscholarly, insensitive and hurtful for university professors to invite speakers who tell Jewish students in front of their classmates that Jews today act like Nazis. It is outrageous that somebody who denies Jews the right to self-determination and compares the Jewish state to Nazis is responsible for commemorating the Jewish genocide.
It is also very troubling that Jewish faculty members have been intimidated from speaking publicly about these issues.
Jacobs said he is encouraged by recent efforts by the administration and he hopes that bringing public attention to this problem will lead the administration at Northeastern to comply with its own eloquently stated core values in its treatment of all minorities on campus.
The video depicts various faculty, staff and nefarious Jewish and Arab opponents of Israel engaged in a duplicitous Orwellian-speak campaign using the annual Holocaust commemoration for a message accusing Israel and Jews of using the Shoah and anti-Semitism for political gain. Norman F. Backstrom, Jr. retired Northeastern history professor who spoke at the 2002 annual Holocaust Awareness commemoration has material up at his website and in email exchanges depicted in the APT/OC video equating Israel’s alleged occupation of the disputed Palestinian territories to the genocides in Rwanda and Darfur. Anti-Israel leftist Jew and Harvard Medical School Professor Alice Rothschild and anti-Semitic Nadim Rouhana , Professor of International Negotiation and Conflict Studies at Tufts University have also appeared at the Northeastern Holocaust events. Rouhanna recently participated in the much criticized Harvard University Kennedy School “One State “Forum.
In the opening stanza of the APT/OC video Norman Finkelstein, denied tenure at Chicago’s DePaul University, is shown in an excerpt from the film Defamation suggesting that Israel was perpetrating a new Holocaust against the Palestinian people. Defamation, produced by Israeli leftist filmmaker Yoav Shamir was screened at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. The ADL, whose executive director Abe Foxman was interviewed for Defamation, nevertheless criticized the production for "belittl[ing] the issue (of anti-Semitism) ... and cheapens the Holocaust. It is Shamir's perverse, personal, political perspective and a missed opportunity to document a serious and important issue."
The APT/OV video has rebuttal speakers including several Holocaust survivors, BU professor Richard Landes and Steven Stotsky, senior research analyst at Middle East media watchdog group CAMERA. The irony is that Stotsky’s father, Dr. Bernard Stotsky endowed the Professorship in Jewish Historical and Cultural Studies, “established specifically to study the genocide of European Jewry”. Landes accused the Northeastern holocaust commemoration of engaging in ‘moral sadism’.
Europe fights Israel with the infamous Nazi weapons by delegitimizing its existence, robbing it of its history, defaming it by propaganda, hatred and attempts to destroy its economy through boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS). Toward this goal it encourages an international campaign of incitement to hatred by financing anti-Israel NGOs and lobbies. Europe claims that Jewish existence in its ancestral homeland, Judea and Samaria, is an "occupation" - colonization. In this way, Israel has become a state that is occupying its own historical homeland.
The APT/OC news release suggested remedies for the Northeastern administration:
1. The University should apologize and launch an independent investigation into how such demonization of Israel and the Jewish community could have occurred on campus.
2. The University should form a new Holocaust Awareness Committee composed of faculty sympathetic to Jewish people hood.
3. Professors who claim that Jews act like Nazis are engaging in hateful bigotry. To prevent such bigotry in the future, the University should extend its existing minority sensitivity training programs to include the Jewish people.
Several relatives of mine who are Northeastern alumni would suggest that the Administration adopt the APT/OC suggestions and return the Annual Holocaust Commemoration to the original objectives of the Stotsky endowment.
Nazem Abu Salim Scapa, an imam from Nazareth, was convicted Sunday on charges of incitement to violence and terror and supporting terror organizations. The Nazareth Magistrates' Court said Scapa's Friday sermons at the Shihab al-Din mosque in the city inspired two terror cells to attack Jews and Christians. One of the gangs has also been charged with murdering cab driver Efim Weinstein in 2009.
Scapa, 47, has served as the imam of the Shihab al-Din mosque for the past 15 years, but he delivered sermons in other mosques as well – including the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem's Old City.
The prosecution said that in 1997 Skafeh established a Salafist-Jihadist group - Ansar Allah Bayit al-Maqdas al-Nasira (Supporters of God - Jerusalem - Nazareth'). The group has as its symbol a globe in the shape of the Dome of the Rock topped by a black flag, a mark also identified with the Taliban as well as with the radical Islamist ideologies of the Salafist movement. Over the years, the imam distributed posters, booklets and manifestos and created a website, Muslim 48, to spread global jihad's ideology, the indictment said.
The prosecution alleged that Ansar Allah calls on its followers to wage jihad in order to lead Islam to victory and free Jerusalem from what it says is a “Zionist-Crusader plot.”
Abu Salim, who has been held under house arrest since the commencement of legal proceedings against him in 2010, also established a website, MUSLIM 48, designed to spread Ansar Allah’s teachings to a worldwide audience . . . Abu Salim expressed solidarity with the al-Qaida terror group and on several occasions encouraged violence, the prosecution argued.
In the indictment, the State said a group of worshipers who were exposed to Scapa's sermons adopted a radical Islamist ideology and committed a series of violent crimes against non-Muslims. Another group collected weapons to be used against Israeli soldiers as well as Pope Benedict XVI, who visited Israel in 2009. Other worshippers vowed to support global jihad.
According to the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) website, the Salafist-jihadist movement is a radical group within Salafism, a Sunni movement that strives to restore the glory days of early Islam by establishing an Islamic society under Shari’a law.
Judge Lily Yung-Gefer mentioned that one of Scapa's sermons called for "violent acts of vengeance (beheadings) against those who have dishonored the prophet (Muhammad). This was no abstract call to annihilate the heretics, but a direct call for violence against anyone who dishonors the prophet and Muslims." Jung-Goffer (two different ways of putting the Judge's name into the Latin alphabet here) also referred to an expert opinion given by Dr. Sagi Polka of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, who said that the Ansar Allah’s ideology is to lead jihad for the purpose of establishing a global caliphate.
. . . while the judge emphasized that freedom of expression is one of the basic rights of any democracy, including Israel, she said that right is not absolute and must be weighed against other rights and interests. Consequently, the penal code prohibits inciting, encouraging or supporting violence or terrorism, including publishing material that could lead to violence or terror, the judge said. Jung-Goffer also said that the court did not accept Abu Salim’s arguments that his statements praising al-Qaida leaders, the Taliban and Islamic Jihad were made innocently, and not out of solidarity with those terror groups.
I'll keep alert for news of his sentencing.
Readers may find news of the Shihab al-Din Mosque familiar. The mosque was originally built illegally right next to the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth, which is on the site traditionally believed to be where the Blessed Virgin Mary received the message of the Angel Gabriel. This report from 2002 describes how the worshippers antagonised Christian Pilgrims and had built something much larger than originally agreed and therefore the authorities demolished it, which did not go down well with the Muslim worshippers. The Mosque's current premises are still not far away.
Under the heading “London Muslims Let’s Do a Bradford and Ensure Ken Livingstone is elected Mayor,” the author of the “London Muslim” blog writes:
Bradford Muslims have shown how if you have the right policies with the right candidate you can activate the Muslim base to come out in huge numbers… our vote is the ultimate weapon of mass destruction that sends fear into the hearts of all those Israelites who have been having kittens since [George] Galloway's election.
While Jews in London have sent warnings to Ken Livingstone to change his pro-Muslim views it is Bradford Muslims, and inshallah we London Muslims, that will fire the ultimate warning and send the Israelites into a tailspin. Bradford will be our catalyst and also a warning to you useless buffoons in the Mosques that have treated your own community with arrogance and contempt expecting us to follow your diktats.
As I reported in yesterday’s Daily Telegraph, the new MP for Bradford West ran a campaign extraordinary in its naked invocation of Islam – at one rally, he actually suggested that voters would “have to answer to the Almighty” on the Day of Judgment if they did not support him. Livingstone – who’s been down at one of London’s most controversial mosques pledging to make London a “beacon” for the words of the Prophet Mohammed – is, as Nick Cohen says in today’s Observer, a kind of Galloway Lite.
The links between Ken and George are fairly close. They shared a platform … in 2010 to campaign for the borough's controversial move to an elected mayoral system – the system that gave us Lutfur Rahman.
Both men also, of course, enjoy the enthusiastic support of the extremist Islamic Forum of Europe, based at the East London Mosque, whose activists helped secure extraordinary – indeed Gallowayesque – swings towards Ken in Tower Hamlets in 2008, boasting that they “got the vote out” for Livingstone after he gave them half a million pounds in GLA grants, against the opposition of his senior officials.
The IFE has been even closer to Mr Galloway – as he said in a secretly-recorded tape obtained by the Telegraph and Channel 4’s Dispatches after his 2005 election victory in Tower Hamlets: “I am indebted more than I can say, more than it would be wise – for them – for me to say, to the Islamic Forum of Europe.” They played the “decisive role,” he said, in his “historic victory.”
The IFE activist Abjol Miah was one of the keynote speakers at Galloway’s “Day of Judgment” rally in Bradford last week, along with various other Respect types from Tower Hamlets – so I’m watching closely to see what, if anything, goes down in the East End at this election.
The general response to George Galloway’s sensational victory in the Bradford West by-election has missed the point by a mile. Comment has concentrated on the undoubtedly stunning defeat for Labour, and has ascribed Galloway’s victory to widespread disaffection with mainstream political parties. This is certainly part of the story — strikingly, a significant section of the Tory vote appears to have gone to Galloway — but it is not the key factor behind this torrid triumph of a discredited demagogue.
For this rested principally on something that commentators are too blinkered or politically correct to mention. Galloway won because young Bradford Muslims turned out for him in droves.
They did not vote for him because he was promising them better public services. They did not vote for him, indeed, on account of any British domestic issues. They did so because he tailored his message to appeal to their religious passions and prejudices about conflicts abroad. Specifically, he campaigned against the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and for the Palestinians, declaring that his victory would help satisfy voters’ ‘duty’ to care about such grievances.
Most commentators have dismissed this victory as a shocking one-off with no further significance than an upset by an entertaining maverick. Not so. For with Galloway’s election, religious extremism has become for the first time a potential game-changer in British politics.
The point being so resolutely ignored is that Galloway ran on an Islamist religious ticket. It wasn’t simply that he was pandering to Islamist foreign policy obsessions. He made explicit references to Islam throughout his campaign. ‘All praise to Allah!’ he saluted his victory through a loud-hailer — having previously told a public meeting that if people didn’t vote for him, Allah would want to know why.
For sure, countless numbers of Muslims will be as horrified as anyone by this playing to the Islamist gallery. While radicalisation among young Muslims has reached terrifying levels, the vast majority of older British Muslims want nothing whatever to do with ideas which threaten their own liberties along with those of everyone else. And those loyal Muslims who serve in the UK’s Armed Forces will doubtless be particularly horrified by such cynical support for Iran or the Taliban.
Yet with so many now so profoundly turned off mainstream politics, there is a real risk that millions of disaffected voters will sit on their hands at future elections — thus giving radicalised Muslims the opportunity to begin reshaping the political map of Britain.
This is precisely what Ken Livingstone is also disgracefully exploiting in the London Mayoral election.
There has long been concern that Livingstone has aligned himself with the radical Muslim Brotherhood, whose goal is to conquer the free world for Islam, and has also pandered to Iran by working as a presenter for the Press TV channel owned by the Iranian regime.
What is so outrageous, however, is the free pass given by the Left to both Galloway and Livingstone. Both support agendas which anyone of conscience, let alone of ‘progressive’ views, should totally abhor. Livingstone has literally embraced Sheikh Yusuf Qaradawi, the Islamic religious leader who justifies the suicide bombing of Israeli children, the execution of homosexuals, female genital mutilation and the killing of coalition troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Galloway has fawned over both Saddam Hussein and the Syrian dictator Bashar al Assad, whose regime is slaughtering untold thousands of Syrians, but to whom Galloway has paid homage as ‘the last Arab ruler’.
Both suck up to terrorist regimes such as Gaza’s Hamas or Iran, the latter declaring regularly its intention to wipe out Israel. Yet in the face of their support of such inhumanity and tyranny, the Left remains silent. Indeed, the shocking fact is that, unlike Galloway who remains an exile from the Labour Party which threw him out, Livingstone is Labour’s candidate for Mayor of London.
. . . this is a dangerous moment for British politics.
When my book Londonistan was published in 2006, my warnings about the supine response of the British governing class to the Islamisation of Britain were dismissed as scare-mongering. What we are now seeing, however, is of course far more alarming even than that response by a complacent and ignorant elite which appears to be possessed of a desire for cultural suicide.
With George Galloway and Ken Livingstone manipulating Islamic religious extremism in order to gain power for themselves, we now stare at the appalling vista of a political landscape transformed by religious sectarianism. The very democratic process is at risk of being turned into a vehicle for the promotion not just of religious bigotry but of the destruction of the West itself.
As mainstream politics steadily disintegrates into incompetence, irrelevance and public scorn, a lethal interloper is now poised to fill the vacuum.
Yet to resist is still to be accused of ‘racism’, of being an ‘uncouth yob’. Thankfully those insults are ceasing to be a deterrent.
A man in Malmö in southern Sweden is suspected of having set his wife on fire following a domestic dispute stemming from her request for a divorce. The 38-year-old woman received serious burns in the incident, but her injuries are reportedly not life threatening.
"She has injuries from her midsection and upward and on the entire front of her body...both her her torso and arms. But her face is in pretty good shape," police spokesperson Peter Martin told the local Skånska Dagbladet newspaper. "The woman wanted a divorce but the man didn't. He was said to be very controlling," police spokesperson Anders Lindell told the Expressen newspaper.
The couple's two children were also present in the apartment at the time, but were unharmed in the incident and have since been taken in by neighbours.
53-year-old husband who was still in the apartment was overpowered by police and apprehended on suspicions of attempted murder with an alternative charge of aggravated assault. The man was placed in arrest later in the evening and interrogated about the incident and denies committing any crime.
