Pakistan Taliban suicide bomber kills 23 in Rawalpindi

From The Guardian

A Taliban suicide bomber has struck a Shia Muslim procession near Pakistan's capital, killing 23 people in the latest of a series of bombings targeting Shias during the holiest month of the year for the sect.

The bomber attacked the procession around midnight on Wednesday in the city of Rawalpindi, located next to the capital, Islamabad, said Deeba Shahnaz, a state rescue official. At least 62 people were wounded by the blast, including six police officers. Eight of the dead and wounded were children, said Shahnaz.

Police tried to stop and search the bomber as he attempted to join the procession, but he ran past them and detonated his explosives, said senior police official Haseeb Shah. The attacker was also carrying grenades, some of which exploded, said Shah.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Taliban set off two bombs within minutes outside a Shia mosque in the southern city of Karachi, killing at least one person and wounding several others

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan claimed responsibility for the attacks in Rawalpindi and Karachi.

"We have a war of belief with Shiites," Ahsan said. "They are blasphemers. We will continue attacking them."

Islamabad is already in lockdown for a D8 summit, bringing together the leaders of eight mostly Muslim countries. Thursday has been declared a holiday to keep people out of the city and thousands of extra police are on duty.

The Egyptian President, Mohamed Morsi, had been due to attend but has now opted to remain in Cairo to monitor the truce brokered between Hamas and Israel.

Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, president of Iran, and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, prime minister of Turkey, are among the leaders who have arrived for Thursday summit.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The First Thanksgiving at Plymouth by Jennie A. Brownscombe

America the Beautiful

Words by Katharine Lee Bates,
Melody by Samuel Ward

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!

O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stem impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!

O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!

Both painting and lyric shamelessly pilfered from Maggie's Farm.

The Al-Qaeda rapper with a 'Barry White growl' who uses out-of-tune hip-hop to call for holy war

The world's only known jihadist rapper who uses out-of-tune hip-hop to drum up support for his holy war has been added to the FBI's Most Wanted List. U.S.-born Omar Shafik Hammami is thought to be a senior leader with al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda affiliated group in Somalia which was placed on the U.S. State Department's terror blacklist in 2008.

Also known as Abu Mansour al-Amriki or 'the American', Hammami has been releasing rap songs in English on the internet since 2009 even though music is forbidden in Al-Qaeda's strict interpretation of Islam. In two songs entitled Send Me A Cruise (Missile) and Make Jihad With Me, he taunts the West in a toneless drone and calls on other young Americans like him to join him on his mission.

In Make Jihad with Me, his singing style is described by ABCNews as a 'deep Barry White growl'.

In the songs, Hammami says he hopes to be killed by a drone strike or in a cruise missile attack so he can achieve martyrdom. He invites young people to join the jihad to 'wipe Israel off the globe' and encourages strikes against the U.S. military in Afghanistan and Somalia.

Hammami was born and raised to a Syrian father and American mother in a quiet suburb in Daphne, Alabama, but spiralled into radicalism before joining militant jihadists in 2007. He is among hundreds of foreign fighters in the ranks of the al-Shabaab, Somalia's most dangerous militant group, that is trying to topple the country's weak U.N.-backed government.

He was pulled into the terror network after marrying a Somalian-Canadian woman and later being 'brainwashed' on internet forums. He moved to Egypt, where he met a fellow fundamentalist from America, Daniel Maldanado, who paved the road to Somalia for him. However, his wife and the mother of his daughter refused to follow him and asked for a divorce.

Earlier this year, he was rumoured to have been beheaded, but a month later he released his autobiography The Story of an American Jihaadi, which critics said contained odd spelling and banal observations.

Wistrich: “Antisemitism is a widening syndrome

Professor Robert S. Wistrich is a recognized expert on antisemitism.

He holds the Neuberger chair for Modern European History at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and heads the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism. He was recently given a Lifetime Achievement award by The Journal for the Study of Antisemitism (The JSA).

He is the author and editor of 29 books, several of which have won international awards.  Our interview with Dr. Wistrich can be found in our collection, The West Speaks.

Dr. Wistrich was interviewed by Hansjorg Muller, editor of the Baseler Zeitung, a German newspaper in Basel, Switzerland.  This was originally published in German in the September 12, 2012 edition of the Baseler Zeitung. Dr. Wistrich translated the article into English. We have permission from the Baseler Zeitung to republish.

Hansjorg  Muller:    In your encyclopedic work, A Lethal Obsession. Anti-Semitism from Antiquity to the Global Jihad (Random House, 2010), you present Islamist antisemitism as an existential danger to modern civilization. Could you explain?

Dr. Robert Wistrich:    In my view, Islamic antisemitism is by far the most dynamic and threatening form of antisemitism existing at present in the contemporary world. It combines the scourge of Islamist terrorism, the spread of jihad, hatred of the West, Holocaust denial, and the genocidal “anti-Zionism” which is state-sanctioned in Iran. The dramatic triumph of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and the alarming growth of militant Salafist movements across the Arab Middle East have greatly increased the level of threat worldwide.

Muller:    Is there a historic connection between European fascism and Islamism?

Wistrich:    The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna, had a radical totalitarian vision of societal transformation, a leadership cult, and visceral hatred of Jews not so different from that of fascism and National Socialism. Moreover, the charismatic founder of the Palestinian Arab national movement, Haj Amin el-Husseini, was a fanatical genocidal anti-Semite who actively collaborated with Adolf Hitler during World War II. This “annihilationist” tradition of Jew-hatred has continued in the Palestinian Hamas movement (an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood) to this very day. Its Sacred Covenant is one of the most nakedly anti-Jewish texts of the entire post-Holocaust era.

Muller:     You have described the impact of the Nazi legacy on radical Islam, but what about classical right-wing antisemitism in present-day Europe?

Wistrich:     Populist right-wing tendencies are especially strong in Hungary, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, parts of Scandinavia, and the Baltic States, in Eastern Europe, and even here in Switzerland. Nor are France, Germany, or Italy immune. Against the background of an alarming world economic crisis, the possible collapse of the Euro-zone, the specter of globalization and a massive migration from the poorer southern countries to Europe, these negative trends will probably grow. Antisemitism is part of this wider syndrome.

Muller;     In your newest book, From Ambivalence to Betrayal. The Left, the Jews, and Israel (University of Nebraska Press, 2012), you are often severely critical of Western leftist attitudes to Israel and the so-called “Jewish Question.” How do you explain left-wing hostility?

Wistrich:    The Left is suffering from acute amnesia. It has forgotten, for example, that Egyptian president Nasser and his Arab allies openly threatened to throw the Jews into the sea in 1967. To this day, Hamas, the Hezbollah and their Iranian backers, not to mention other Arab states, constantly broadcast their intention to eradicate the Zionist “cancer” from the Middle East map. So I ask people on the Left — is that a “progressive” position? Hardly. The Left has also forgotten that there was an uninterrupted Jewish presence in the Holy Land long before the birth of Islam — and despite endless harassment, along with Roman, Byzantine, Crusader, and Muslim persecutions and massacres, this Jewish settlement continued until the emergence of the modern Zionist movement.

Muller:    Why do you think so many leftists are pro-Islamist today?

Wistrich:   The Western Left and the Islamists both share the myth that Israel is a “white,” Western, and colonial intrusion in the Middle East. They both have embraced a radically distorted view of Palestinians as defenseless “Jews,” downtrodden, and ruthlessly abused by fascist Israelis. Behind this demonic imagery there is an antisemitic view of Israel and America as twin embodiments of capitalist-imperialist evil. Needless to say, this mythology is totally disconnected from empirical reality.
Muller:     In light of current trends, do you see any future for European Jewry? If you were living here, would you stay or go?
Wistrich:    I personally believe that the long-term future of European Jewry is bleak. I would not wish to decide for European Jews what future they should choose, but I am convinced that the land of Israel is the only possible spiritual and political homeland for the Jewish people.  Let us also remember that it was in the city of Basel that Theodor Herzl first proclaimed to the wider Jewish and Gentile world in 1897 the birth of modern Zionism. In his diary he prophesied that within fifty years a Jewish State would inevitably arise. Many people at the time dismissed him as a charlatan or a dreamer. But his prophecy came true and for that we should be thankful.

Nigerian Muslim riot leaves 4 dead, church burnt: residents

From AFP: KANO, Nigeria — A mispronunciation taken to be blasphemous in Nigeria's north sparked a riot by Muslim youths Thursday, leaving four people dead as well as a church and shops burnt, police and residents said.

"What happened in (the town of) Bichi was misinformation," Kano state police chief Ibrahim Idris told reporters. "Rumours went round that someone blasphemed the Prophet and there was a breakdown of law and order."

Residents reported four people dead along with the church and Christian-owned shops burnt. Soldiers and policemen deployed in the town. The riot came on the same day that former British prime minister Tony Blair and the incoming spiritual head of the world's Anglicans Justin Welby launched an initiative in the Nigerian capital Abuja aimed at Muslim-Christian reconciliation.

According to Idris, a Christian tailor mispronounced the name of a dress while chatting with his Muslim neighbour in Hausa, the major language spoken in the north, changing the meaning to 'the Prophet has come to the market'.

"Four Igbos were killed in the attacks. One of them was thrown into a ditch near my house," one resident said, referring to a mainly Christian ethnic group. "Scores of shops owned by Christians and a church were burnt by a large mob of Muslim youth who set bonfires on the road and disrupted traffic."

Another resident said he saw four dead bodies "hacked with machetes by the rioters".

A nurse at the Bichi General Hospital said the tailor who was severely beaten by the mob had been evacuated to Kano for treatment.

Rotherham election: Labour complain about Yvonne Ridley's Respect party 'closet racists' claim.

From The Guardian

The Labour party has complained to the police over an election leaflet purporting to come from George Galloway's Respect party, which refers to Labour as a "party of closet racists" who are prone to "anti-Islamic bigotry".

The leaflet, entitled "Respect Yourself", was allegedly sent to a number of Asian households in Rotherham, where a byelection will be held at the end of the month following the resignation of Denis MacShane over his expenses.

"Dear residents," the single sheet of A4 began, "On Thursday the 29th November every voter and most importantly every Muslim and Asian family in Rotherham will have the opportunity to send a message to the sickening racism, Islamophobia and corruption of the Labour party here in this town."

It went on to claim Respect is the only UK political party to openly embrace Islam. It says the party has "twice elected MPs to stand against the corrupt practices of the Conservatives and Labour's Savile Row socialism." And it suggests Labour is guilty of "'If they are brown or black send them back' racism not seen since National Front campaigns of the 1970s."

A Labour spokesman said the party had written to Rotherham's returning officer and the police. They believe the leaflet, which did not bear Respect's official logo, violates election law.

But on Thursday (Press Officer Ron) McKay said the Rotherham leaflet was "most certainly not from Respect" or the party's candidate, journalist Yvonne Ridley, who converted to Islam after being captured by the Taliban.

. . . former home secretary David Blunkett said the leaflet was a disgrace. He added: "It's time Respect are exposed for these kinds of claims – they used them in previous elections and now they are trying to fool the people of Rotherham with them. I am setting out a clear challenge to George Galloway and Yvonne Ridley – they must withdraw these claims or face action by the Labour party, including taking this up with the Electoral Commission. If Respect claim this is not something they have produced they must immediately distance themselves from it and make this clear in their leaflets."

Israel’s Operation Pillar of Defense: The Reckoning

At 9:00PM Jerusalem Time, Wednesday, November 21, 2012 a tenuous cease fire went into effect between Hamas in Gaza and Israel ending the eight day rocket war. The cease fire agreement language is fairly skimpy, see here . The cease fire was allegedly brokered by Egypt’s President Morsi, a former Muslim Brotherhood leader,  with Ismail Haniyah , Palestinian Prime Minister of Hamas, a Muslim Brotherhood affiliate, and Dr. Ramadan Abdullah Shalah of Iranian controlled and funded Palestinian Islamic Jihad.  Dr. Shalah is also on the FBI Most Wanted Terrorist list.  Morsi was incentivized to undertake this diplomatic effort because Egypt was rapidly running out of hard currency reserves and his faltering economy has been propped up more than $10.8 billion in US, IMF and EU aid.  Just prior to the cease fire  announcement the IMF in Washington approved  a $4.8 billion loan to Egypt.  The Israeli  go-between directly involved with negotiations in Cairo was Mossad head, Tamir Pardo, working with Egyptian Intelligence in conveying responses to terms from Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu.

Shortly following the start of the cease fire 12 rockets were fired and more than 20 attacks launched by terrorist groups in Gaza. But the truce appears to be holding.

The cease fire agreement is not a happy arrangement  to many in Southern Israel most directly at risk of rocket attacks from Gaza.  Nor was it easily accepted  by some of the 30,000 reservists called up, who apparently, were twice issued orders to get ready to move when ultimately told to stand down, yesterday. In protest against the cease fire a group of 16 IDF soldiers sent a message with their bodies saying “Bibi’s a loser” that went viral via Facebook.  Other protests in Israel indicated that government had its “hands tied”.  The a poll in Israel  gave a 38% ‘good’ rating to PM Netanyahu perhaps indicating that the merged Likud Beiteinu bloc might not have a clear shot at an electoral majority in the coming January 2013 elections.  Just before the outburst of rocket attacks that triggered Operation Pillar of Defense by Israel, late October 2012 polls indicated that Likud Beiteinu might secure  between 35 to 42 seats in the new Knesset.

Notwithstanding the rising chorus of criticism by opposition  political leaders, the Netanyahu government stated that Hamas and the Gaza terrorists had been severely punished and that the long range rocket threat had been decimated.  The cease fire agreement was allegedly delayed because of the Tel Aviv terror bombing of a bus on Wednesday  that injured  16 persons.  Despite the anger and pique of the inner cabinet of the Netanyahu government at the bombing  according to an Israel Hayom account, the  ‘pressure’ was put  on Jerusalem by  the Obama Administration to proceed  with the announcement  of the cease fire agreement  in Cairo.

Israel Hayom summarized the IDF ‘successes’:

All told, Israel hit more than 1,600 targets in its eight-day campaign, with many parts of Gaza City now in ruins. It is now unclear what the effect on Hamas is and what damage it sustained. IDF officials said Wednesday that Operation Pillar of Defense achieved its stated objectives, although these were modest, focusing mainly on "shoring up deterrence," crippling Hamas rocket-launching capability and "minimizing" the threat on the Israeli home front.

Among the successes of the operation are the assassination of Hamas' top commander, Ahmed al- Ja'abari, and the damage to the terrorist groups' strategic weapons systems: the long-range rockets that can strike further than 40 kilometers (28.4 miles) and the hundreds of medium- and short-range rockets and launchers. But when it comes to the medium- and short-range rockets, the damage to Hamas' firepower was not as severe. By the time Wednesday's truce had set in, Hamas had fired more than 1,500 rockets over eight days. Its stockpile, which at the height of the conflict comprised some 10,000 rockets, still includes some 6,000 projectiles, although only a handful are considered to have long-range capability.

The much vaunted Iron Dome system intercepted 400 rockets  that were  launched at civilian targets for an estimated 84% kill rate. Longer Range Iranian supplied Fajr-5’s and locally retrofitted Grad rockets were launched against targets in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. These resulted  resulting in damage to an apartment house in Rishon Lezion and harmless hits in Gush Etzion near Hevron.  One rocket hit a fourth floor apartment in Kiryat Malachi killing three adults, Mirah Scharf, 25, Aharon Smadja, 49, and Itzik Amsalem, 24, and injuring a  three month old  baby.  Pictures of the injured baby ended up on a Hamas website as propaganda suggesting that it was a Palestinian child.  The Pallywood bloggers forgot to remove the emblem of Kiryat Malachi from the picture.  A fourth Israeli civilian died from injuries and an IDF reserve officer was mortally wounded by shrapnel from an exploding rocket that hit the Eshkol region.

The toll of the eight day war in Gaza was 167 dead among them allegedly 27 children. 30 leaders of both the military wing of Hamas’ militia, Izzedine al Qassam brigade, and Islamic Jihad were targeted. Among them were:

•Ahmed al- Ja'abari, head of Hamas' military wing,

•Hab's Hassan Us Msamch, senior operative in Hamas' police ,

•Ahmed Abu Jalal, Commander of the military wing in Al-Muazi,

•Khaled Shaer, senior operative in the anti-tank operations,

•Osama Kadi, senior operative in the smuggling operations in the southern Gaza Strip,

•Muhammad Kalb, senior operative in the aerial defense operations,

•Ramz Harb, Islamic Jihad senior operative in propaganda in Gaza city,

The guesstimates of the cost to Israel of the eight day rocket war range upwards of 3.2 billion NIS, including the cost for 30,000 reservists called up who are paid at 450 NIS  per day.. The total cost of the 400  Iron Dome interceptions  has been estimated at  $25 to $30 million.

Perhaps the  accuracy of  IAF drone and F-16 attacks in Gaza can be credited to a report by the Sunday Times (London) – that IDF Sayeret  commando teams alleged  were  sent to determine  underground launching locations for the long range Fajr-5’s and Grad rockets  and  whether  were fitted with chemical warheads.

The cease fire agreement language is very much akin to that achieved with the end of Operation Cast Lead in 2009.  Hence it has been viewed as problematic by some Israeli analysts.   Note these comments from Dr. Aaron Lerner of Independent Media Review and Analysis (IMRA) of key provisions:

The obligation of each party not to engage in "hostilities" is not linked to the compliance of the other party.

  • In point of fact, the agreement explicitly and specifically prohibits Israel from the "targeting of individuals" - so that Israel cannot dispatch . . .a specific terrorist either before, during or after they have engaged in an activity against Israel,
  • The only relief available to a party in the event that the other party violates the understanding is to inform Egypt of the violation, with Egypt following up on the violation,
  • While the understanding places no restriction on the importation or local manufacture of weapons in the Gaza Strip, it prohibits any Israeli activity inside the Gaza Strip against this activity. (Take note: Prime Minister Netanyahu said last night that "the United States and Israel would work together to fight the smuggling of weapons to the terror organizations",
  • Mr. Netanyahu did not mention Egypt and in the case of the Americans, this relates only to the smuggling of weapons – not their manufacture in the Gaza Strip.

Prof. Barry Rubin of the GLORIA Center in Israel had a more nuanced view of the cease fire agreement based on PM Netanyahu comments:

"Israel obviously cannot sit idly while our enemy reinforces itself with weapons of terror. Therefore we decided, President Obama and myself, that the United States and Israel would work together to fight the smuggling of weapons to the terror organizations – weapons, virtually all of which come from Iran."

Here is a very significant point that's being missed in all of the coverage and discussions regarding the ceasefire. Netanyahu's remark suggests there will be a new anti-smuggling effort involving U.S. intelligence, cooperation with other countries, and pressure on Egypt to make it harder to get weapons--especially missiles--into the Gaza Strip. It is clear that long-range missiles are the hardest thing to bring in and the easiest weaponry for Egypt to stop at the border.

Perhaps PM Netanyahu’s views on joint US and Israeli efforts at curtailing arms smuggling are simply those  already contained in a Memorandum of Agreement (MOU) inked on January 16, 2009 between the two countries at the conclusion of Operation Cast Lead.  That MOU specifically proposed joint counterterrorism and intelligence activities with participation by Egyptian security forces under then  strongman Hosni Mubarak.   Note some of the operative language from the 2009 MOU:

1. The Parties will work cooperatively with neighbors and in parallel with others in the international community to prevent the supply of arms and related materiel to terrorist organizations that threaten either party, with a particular focus on the supply of arms, related materiel and explosives into Gaza to Hamas and other terrorist organizations.

 2. The United States will work with regional and NATO partners to address the problem of the supply of arms and related materiel and weapons transfers and shipments to Hamas and other terrorist organizations in Gaza, including through the Mediterranean, Gulf of Aden, Red Sea and eastern Africa, through improvements in existing arrangements or the launching of new initiatives to increase the effectiveness of those arrangements as they relate to the prevention of weapons smuggling to Gaza. Among the tools that will be pursued are:

Enhanced U.S. security and intelligence cooperation with regional governments on actions to prevent weapons and explosives flows to Gaza that originate in or transit their territories; including through the involvement of relevant components of the U.S. Government, such as U.S. Central Command, U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, and U.S. Special Operations Command.

Clearly, given the influx of the longer range Fajr-5 rockets from  Iran by way of the Sudan and Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and from Libya across Egypt through the tunnels into Gaza, the 2009 MOU hasn’t been an effective deterrent to halt smuggling. See our post, on the smuggling issue, here.

As the cease fire was announced yesterday news came of Egyptian authorities seizing another shipment of Gaddafi-era military contraband destined for Gaza:

Security officials in Marsa Matrouh have confiscated 108 Grad rockets and
400,000 rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition bound for Sinai in a foiled
smuggling attempt.

The head of Egypt's drug control was informed that smugglers would take the
Matrouh International Road from Libya overnight. Authorities set up several
security checkpoints and police patrolled the desert roads to arrest the
Security authorities stationed in the Ras al-Hekma area found the weapons in
a vehicle that had driven off the road. The people inside reportedly fled.
Officials are intensifying efforts to find and arrest the smugglers.

Will the cease fire agreement hold?  Perhaps that has to do  with Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and  Palestine Resistance Committee  viewing  the outcome of the eight day rocket war with Israel  as a close run thing .  More importantly,  can an effective arrangement be found to put teeth into the 2009MOU between Israel, and the US to prevent smuggling of weapons to restock those lost by Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the eight day rocket war. Moreover,  how much will the Obama Administration have to provide in billions of taxpayer funding to prop up  the government of President Morsi,  a former senior leader of the Muslim Brotherhood,  whom President Obama had called “not exactly an ally nor an enemy”.  Meanwhile, we empathize with the 3.5 million Israelis who were threatened by the terror rockets launched  from Gaza.  Finally, will this cease fire agreement stress PM Netanyahu and the Likud Beiteinu coalition in their campaign for election to lead a new Knesset?  Proving the adage that there is no such thing as a sure bet. Especially given the Jihadis that now surround Israel supported by Iran and a new Islamist strongman in Egypt who cannot be relied upon to represent your interests.

Israel: Shin Bet, Police Arrest Suspects - One An Arab Muslim With Israeli Citizenship - in Tel Aviv Bus Bombing

That was quick...

As reported by the Jerusalem Post.

'Shin Bet, police arrest suspects in Tel Aviv bus bombing'.

'Israel Security Agency reveals suspects were arrested hours after the terror attack that wounded 29 Israelis; cell's members mostly from Beit Lakia, near Ramallah; interrogation incomplete, further arrests expected.

'Shin Bet officers and police arrested the terrorists who bombed a bus in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, several hours after the device exploded, the agency revealed on Thursday evening.

'The cell's members mostly came from Beit Lakia, near Ramallah, the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) announced in a statement, without saying how many were under arrest.

'During their preliminary interrogation, the cell's members identified with Hamas and Islamic Jihad and said they had agreed to commit an act of terrorism, prepared the bomb and purchased cellular phones to detonate it by remote control.

Looks as though they were not quite convinced enough of the 72 heavenly virgins, to be prepared to go all out to obey the 'and are slain' part of the 'they fight in allah's cause and slay and are slain' Quran verse...- CM

'They also said one of the cell's members was from Taiba in Israel.  He originally came from Beit Lakia, and acquired Israeli citizenship after marrying an Israeli Arab.

It is a safe bet that this creature, and the female by whom he gained entry to Israel, are Muslims.  I wonder how many of these sorts of marriages-to-import-future-jihad-assassins are going on?  The authorities in Israel would be advised to go back through the past ten years and check every such registration and citizenship application, and check up on what the couples involved are currently up to....Maybe they are.  I hope so. - CM

'The cell is said to have reached Tel Aviv in a car belonging to an Arab from east Jerusalem who employed the man from Taiba.

'The latter was in charge of putting the device on the bus, and after he notified his Beit Lakia commander by phone, the bomb was detonated from Beit Lakia.

'The Shin Bet said the interrogation was still not complete and that further arrests were expected.

'Of the 28 Israelis wounded in the bombing, five remained hospitalized on Thursday, one in serious condition."

The Fifth Column - Arab Muslims resident within Israel -  is at least as dangerous as and perhaps more dangerous (because of where it is) than the openly declared and readily identifiable enemy that inhabits the sprawling military base of the Ummah that is Jihad Fortress Gaza.  It is also at least as dangerous as, and probably more dangerous than, those Muslims who currently squat and plot and throw rocks and molotov cocktails and sometimes riot  in  Judea and Samaria.   For the Ummah, or Mohammedan Mob, is the sea within which the Jihadists, the sharia assassins, swim and from which, ceaselessly, they emerge.  Wherever there are Muslims living among or next door to Infidels, sooner or later there is Jihad.  - CM
