Regular readers may recall that my family and I enjoy regular holidays in Norfolk. During one such holiday some 15 years ago we visited the town of Heacham near Hunstanton where, in the parish church of St Mary the Virgin we fell into conversation with Mrs Freda England the parish historian. She told me of the connections the village had with Pocahontas and Virginia in the US. The conversation stayed in my mind as the germ of an idea, which with the number of Virginia events and exhibitions this year to commemorate the 400 year anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, resulted in my spending some time visiting places significant to Pocahontas that she would have known during the last year of her life, 1616-1617 which she spent in England.  more..

I've lived in Heacham since 1975 and I have recently updated the Pocahontas John Rolfe John Smith Story for the 400th Jamestown Heacham Exhibition in 2007 that I first made in 1996 and 1997 displayed in Heacham St Mary's Church.Freda England was a great friend and wealth of knowledge about village history who helped me as did many other churches and people in places connected to this interesting time in history. It is on display again this summer 2008 in Heacham church. There are some photos already on another website of this exhibition showing the mulberry tree tree that a visitor must have taken last summer June 2007.I am still trying to discover whether Pocahontas son Thomas received from King James 1 a bible with his uncle and Lord and Lady Delaware at his palace just before the king died in 1625.This could be fact and true or just a legend. But we have a beautiful Heacham Church Lectern bible dated 1617 by the Royal printer that Freda thought was possibly the Rolfe family bible. It is stored in Norwich because it is so old. Anyone who has seen any record of this presentation please get in touch-thank you This may be recorded in the Royal Household  papers of King James I  or his Cofferers Household Accounts kept at Kew Library Archives in England.

I would love to email you a photo of the mulberry tree trunk inside the offices of west Norfolk Council next to the original garden wall.A piece of this extremely hard petrified bole fell of when Freda took her brownies in 1966 and it is kept by her family as sadly she died about four years ago.

An informative webiste with details to back up the information given. Living only 45 minutes away I have visited Heacham many times and  it is great to be able to teach the link  of it and Pocahontas to my daughters. I never knew the link myself until recently and wanting to find out more I have looked at many sites but think this is the best by far.
