Vaste Programme

"Daniel Pipes's formulation is valid only when it is understood that the moderate Islam that is the solution has to be invented -- it is not a traditional form of Islam."
-- from Robert Spencer's comment on Hirsi Ali's assertion that Pipes' formulation is "wrong."

"the moderate Islam that is the solution has to be invented..."

Vaste programme, monsieur.

Since we're inventing a religion, maybe we could make it like Scientology - sort of a combination religion and pyramid scheme. Although the traditional tithe from a billion new adherents wouldn't be anything to sneeze at....Either way it's best to get in on the ground floor.

Let’s start by getting rid of the Koran, Hadith, and Sira. Next, renounce Mohammad and everything he said and did. Then, scrap the four schools of jurisprudence.

This leaves Moses and Jesus. Now they have a choice: accept Jesus’ divinity or become Unitarians. I’ll let them figure that one out. Wake me up in a few centuries.

Inventing a liberal Islam isn't any more of a vast and impossible program than inventing freedom and democracy in the Middle East!  If you're going to fail anyway, why not fail big?
