I agree the initial invasion was the right decision, it's the staying to hold Iraq together part I disagree with. I doubt anyone who supported the initial invasion would have done so had they known in advance it would wind up costing 3 trillion dollars and keep our military tied down for 5 years with no end in sight.

There is simply no excuse for not knowing that it would last 5+ years and cost trillions of dollars. That was completely obvious to anyone not mired in total self-delusion.

Not true. We could have pulled out immediately after finding Saddam in December 2003 and having thoroughly looked for,but not found WMD. Spring 2004 was not too early to begin a draw-down that might have been completed by the end of the summer. That's what I expected. Nation-building and keeping the peace?between rival sects weren't originally on the agenda -- no one was told we would be "remaking" Iraq -- that came, almost smuggled in, during the latter part of that first year.
