I wouldn't trust Hersh any farther than I would "Baghdad Bob" but this does sound like the military I know. The leftist belief that the military is slavering for war is utterly false, for many reasons. Aside from the fact that most military commanders have a genuine regard for their men's lives, war screws up the promotion system, dirties up or destroys the equipment, and makes for a lot more work. But personally, I don't believe the story. Given the political restraints that Bush has put on our operations in Iraq (remember the Falluja two-step?) it is absurd to believe that he would ever authorize using a nuke. This sounds more like something a liberal jounalist woud imagine Bush doing, not the real thing.

This story is probably bunk for yet another reason: this simply isn't the way the military generally acts. The President is the Commander-in Chief. If he says "study this option" the military studies it. They may recommend against the option studied, even strongly, but a Chariman of the JCS does not say to the President, "no, we are not going to look into this option, it's a bad idea". My guess is that Hersch's "senior intelligence official" was a CIA guy who wanted to make Bush and Cheney look like bomb-throwing madmen. It might be true, but I'd bet against it.
