Will Self on W. G. Sebald in the TLS:
The literature of Holocaust survivors can tell us how it was, but it can do little to explain why it was. For that we have impotently required a fullly self-actualized literature of the perpetrators; in other words: an impossibility.
I have a vague idea what Will Self is getting at, but why "self-actualized"? Do we need it? Reason not the need, as King Lear said, and the hierarchical Maslow didn't:
