How To Talk To A Climate Skeptic (Booster Shot)
One More Time: How To Talk to A Climate Skeptic

How to Talk to a Climate Skeptic

Below is a complete listing of the articles in "How to Talk to a Climate Skeptic," a series by Coby Beck containing responses to the most common skeptical arguments on global warming. There are four separate taxonomies; arguments are divided by:

Individual articles will appear under multiple headings and may even appear in multiple subcategories in the same heading.

Stages of Denial

The fascinating thing is that one could lay out a very similar template entitled 'How to talk to a Jihad Sceptic', that is, "How to talk to a person who accuses you of 'Islamophobia' and tells you that you are making a big fuss about nothing and that there is no such thing as a Global Jihad and that Islam really is no better or worse or different from any other world religion".  Indeed, one can find such a template at sites such as 'Citizen Warrior'.

I have often felt that the 'shape' and tone of the arguments commonly made against those who worry and warn about climate disruption, is very similar to the 'shape' and tone of the arguments commonly made against those who worry and warn about the Third Jihad.

I don't know where I stand on global warming. The passion expressed by those who claim it's true borders on the irrational/religious, which is why I'm somewhat skeptical at times.

Is it a kind of substitute religion, one which will see us punished /chastised by the hand of mother nature for our decadence and our sins of over consumption And to be frank the fervour shown by SOME tenors of global warming has such an end-times flavour to it, that I cannot take them too seriously.

I haven't noticed this irrational passion of climate scientists to stick by their guns no matter what the counter-evidence presented. I have noticed their growing, and well-justified, annoyance with the Know-Nothings who keep attacking them using, again and again, the same points, that have again and again been refuted. And they even keep dragging up the same names -- there are only a few, with Lindzen in the lead -- as "experts" who are bravely telling the truth despite that "cabal of climatologists." After a while, one can't stand the nonsense any more.

I know several of those who are celebrated for their work in this area. I know that when they began their work, decades ago, they were, or at least wanted to be, what might be called "skeptics" -- people who, if they had any parti pris to begin with, it was naturally to hope that anthropogenic global warming would turn out to be a fasle problem. But the more they studied, the more data they collected, the more they read the literature, the harder it was to continue to hold to that belief. . It is, after all, most painful was it to come to another conclusion. But the data was so overwhelming, and the evidence mounts up, and some now say that  all along, they have been underestimating the results becaue what is going on today reflects what was spewed out since the beginning of the Inidustrial Revolution, but does not, for various reasons, reflect what has taken place during the last half-century -- the effects of that are all still to come. .

My late brother knew a lot about this subject. We had many conversations about global warming. He offered me his predictions as to what would happen in the next century. Very calmly, he offered a hair-raising list of changes in temperature, ocean levels rising (and the cities and land areas most threatened),  the collapse of food supplies and, consequently, the great wars over resources to come, the mass disappearance of species, and much more.. Dispassionately, clear-sightedly, and with his usual relentless and sometimes frightening lucidity he explained to me  why what has been stated publicly so far has always been on the side of understatement,

Those who think that  global warming is all some kind of scheme concocted by "leftwing scientists" who either are prompted by the desire to get  "grant money" or who want this "phony"  crisis to lead to -- choose your favorite crazed charge -- "world government" or "socialism," have it all wrong. Anthropogenic global warming is much more lilely to lead to resource wars, ferocious nationalism, Hobbesianism at every level, and a  world of unending Sauve Qui Peut, where the advanced West, made vulnerable by its own suicidal compunctions, could lose out.

Hugh's comment makes good points, butI choose to remain neutral.

Science and all aside, what IS irrefutable is the fact that in only the past 2,000 years, earth's climate ( or at least that of the northern hemisphere) has undergone radical temperature and precipitation swings on several occasions, all of which occurred before the industrial age. From what I can glean, not a single climatologist has come up with satisfactory explanations for such changes. So if such wideoscillations in temperatureare possible, and sincethey appear to have occurred without any anthropocentric contribution, how can we thenbe certain that the climate change SOME say is nowoccurring is even due to human action?

All I know (for sure) is that the earth's climate, and this in only the past two thousand years, has undergone some very great changes ( in both temperature directions), and that these changes ALL occurred irrespective of what humans were doing.

Also, is climatology an exact science in the way that physics and chemistry are? Does it provide us with foolproof modelsthat can predict with perfect accuracy AND regularity the causes, thecourse and the time-lineof climate change as related to human action?

I'm not so sure.

Rather than combatting climate change per se, I think we should put the emphasis on eliminating our dependance on petroleum and on the promotion of alternate sources of energy.

Imagine, for example, if all the money we've spent on both the Iraq and Afganistan wars had instead been funneled into the development of alternate energies. Imagine what we could have come up with?

We turn our backs on the future, on new energy technologies, and in an effort to satisfythe narrow interests of a small group of 'coal-ticks' , we spend trillions to remain firmly rootedin The Age of Steam.
