Maybe, but let's not be hasty.

When Merkel was in Turkey recently, she did refer to the lack of 'progress' by Turkey in resolving the Cyprus issues; and Sarkozy tries to stall Turkey by talking about offering Turkey only 'special partnership', not full membership of the European Union .

What are the likely results of the next general elections in Germany and in France? If the 'left' parties gain office then Turkey's chances improve.

And all the time Obama pushes for Turkey's entry, as do all three main political parties of UK.

As does the O.I.C. and the 20 millions or so Muslims (not least Turks in e.g. Germany) who are already inside the E.U.
