Among my favourite books – I mean the books that I actually own – is a first edition of Dr Johnson’s Lives of the English Poets, published in 1781 in four volumes. I bought the Lives in a bookshop in Dublin – in Blackrock, to be exact – for what seemed to me a bargain price, though whether it really was a bargain I shall not know until I try to sell them, which I never shall. more>>>

There is only one line I remember - a priceless one about the son of one of the poets:
He was found wanting of wit and was sent to the Americas.

As to the brown ink in the margins, permanent fountain pen or dip pen ink is made with dye and iron oxide. When first written the ink color is black due to the black dye. Over time the dye fades but the brown residue of the iron oxide remains and that's what makes the ink "permanent".
