The Attempted Assassination of Free Speech Advocate Lars Hedegaard
clear

Lars Hedegaard of Dispatch International, Danish and

International Free Press Societies

On February 5, 2013 Lars Hedegaard went to his door in Copenhagen to face a person he thought was a mailman. After handing Hedegaard a package, the “mailman” immediately pulled out a gun and fired a shot barely missing Hedegaard’s head. When the assassin dropped  the weapon, a scuffle ensued and the assassin retrieved the gun but failed to fire it a second time promptly fleeing the scene. The perpetrator of this attempted assassination has yet to be apprehended by Danish police. Such are the dangers of being the founder of both the Danish and International Free Press Societies and prosecuted by Danish courts for something protected in the First Amendment of the US Constitution – the right to criticize a religion, Islam.

Hedegaard and co-editor Ingrid Carlqvist founded and publish Dispatch International, a weekly newspaper devoted to many problems and issues – one of them being Islam and immigration.  When we interviewed Hedegaard (included in our collection The West Speaks) we noted Hedegaard’s comment upon his Kafkaesque conviction for hate speech on May 3, 2011 by the Eastern Superior Court in Copenhagen under Denmark’s infamous Article 266b. A conviction for simply calling attention to the parlous condition of Muslim women for which he was branded a ‘racist’.  Hedegaard indicated that he would pursue an appeal before the Supreme Court and if denied bring the matter to the European Court of Human Rights. He said:

This is a fight for liberty against tyranny. It will be long and hard but losing is no option.

Hedegaard follows the dictum of fellow Danish free speech fighter and close friend, political cartoonist Kurt Westergaard. Westergaard was attacked by a Somali Muslim who barged into his home equipped with an ax to do bodily harm and worse. Hedegaard, Westergaard and Swedish artist Lars Vilks have all been attacked by Jihadis intent on silencing them for alleged Blasphemy, criticizing Islam. So far, these assassins have failed. However, some in the mainstream media (MSM) believe the three Scandinavian ‘victims’ have brought it upon themselves. Westergaard, at the conclusion  of our interview clearly differs with this  bizarre view. He said:

If you want to do something about freedom of speech then the only choice is USE IT, exercise it.

When we told Hedegaard by email that he was channeling the mythic figure of Danish warrior for King Charlemagne, Holger Dansk, the name taken by the WWII Danish Resistance, he quipped: “I never met Holger but I understand that he was quite a guy.”

Hans Christian Andersen wrote a fairytale about Holger Danske asleep in the Castle of Kronborg, prepared to wake up for action when Denmark  is threatened. Hedegaard is not asleep. He relentlessly warns his fellow Danes and all concerned Westerners of the threats to their human and civil rights from a totalitarianism with a thin veneer of religious practices.

Against this background we interviewed Hedegaard who is under 24/7 Danish police protection.

What is the mission of Dispatch International, the weekly newspaper that you edit and publish?

The paper is co-edited by Ingrid Carlqvist and me.

The mission is simply to report on problems and issues that the MSM will hardly ever touch, such as free speech, massive third-world immigration, Islamization, growing doubts over “man-made climate change”, political abuse of power. We tend to support Israel’s right to exist and defend itself. We are also the only newspaper in Scandinavia that does not automatically consider American Republicans to be lunatics.

What occurred on February 5th, when you opened your door?

There was a man dressed up as a mailman saying that he had a package for me. Immediately after handing it over (it turned out to be empty), he pulled out a gun and fired at my head. Though there was hardly a yard between us, he missed. He then tried to fire another shot, but before he could do that, I punched him in the face, which made him drop the gun. After a scuffle, he eventually got hold of it, tried to fire again, failed and ran away.

Was there any verbal exchange with your assailant before he fired his weapon at you?

All he said was that he had a package and I said thank you.

Have the Danish police apprehended your assailant?

No.

Has the perpetrator’s identity been revealed?

So far I’m the only one who has seen him. He is an immigrant and probably of Arab or Pakistani extraction.

When did you enter into 24/7 Police protection?

I have been under police protection since a few minutes after the assassination attempt.

What restrictions have they placed on your communications and travel?

I’ve been advised not to talk about that.

What were the reactions to the attempted assassination in Denmark, the EU and  America?

I don’t know that there has been much of a reaction in the EU or America. The attack has been roundly condemned by most Danish political parties and most of the press. Some of the newspapers have, however, availed themselves of this opportunity to condemn me for criticizing Islam and one might easily get the impression from some of the MSM that I’m responsible for the attack. In other words, if you say something that makes Muslims mad, you have it coming.

How much coverage and commentary did the incident receive in mainstream Danish media?

It was front-page news in Denmark and may be so again if they catch the culprit.

Where is Dispatch International printed and distributed?

Our Swedish-language print edition is printed in Denmark and is mainly distributed in Sweden but we have some subscribers in Denmark and Norway. In addition, we put out online editions in Swedish, Danish and English.

Prior to the incident  was the Dispatch International website attacked?

Yes, quite a few times we have been victims of very sophisticated attacks – some of them can be traced back to the editorial offices of major Swedish news organizations. We have reported them to the Swedish police but doubt that they are doing anything to apprehend the cybercriminals.

Has this incident put on hold continued publication of Dispatch International?

No, we have managed to continue publication.

Could you tell us about the websites that have been put up in your honor?

Not much. www.larshedegaard.com has been set up without my knowledge. I do, of course, approve of the initiative.

Now that you have been attacked in this manner, what does that tell us
about  threats to life and limb from  engaging in defense of free speech?

This is the first attempt on my life. I fear that such incidents will become more common as Islam gains ground all over the Western world and can count on increasing support from the European and American Left.

Is there any future for  free expression  in Eurabia, given what you, Lars Vilks, Kurt Westergaard,  Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff and Geert Wilders have experienced?

That is by no means certain but it is important to fight for it. It will definitely not survive in regions of our countries where Muslims dominate. That is already a fact in most European cities and similar circumstances may come to prevail in parts of North America.

How can we support your important mission to print the truth about Islam, Blasphemy Codes and immigration in the EU?

The best way is to take out a subscription to our online English edition. Go to: <http://www.d-intl.com/subscribe-2/?lang=en>
