The Last Fighting Tommy by Harry Patch and Richard Van Emden.
The life of Harry Patch the only surviving veteran of the trenches.
Harry Patch is 110. He is not the oldest survivor of the Great War; that is Henry Allingham of the Royal Flying Corps (later RAF) who is aged 112. But since the deaths of the last US and Austro Hungarian veterans earlier this year he is believed to be the only man left who fought in the trenches (as opposed to above them). Bill Stone of the Royal Navy is also still alive and some Frenchmen; they are only 108.
From a quick skim the book is about not just about the Battle of Passchendale but a whole century of experience. He was in the AFS during WWII, same as my Dad but in different cities. Much of his life he worked as a plumber.
The house is quiet so time to put the kettle on and open the bickies I think.
