Mumbai's The Word

by Theodore Dalrymple (Dec. 2008)

I once stayed at the Taj Mahal in Bombay (as it was then still called). I didn't enjoy it as much as I might have done, because I was recovering from the hepatitis I had contracted in the South Seas. But I still recognised the magnificence of the institution, even as I regretted the modern excrescence that been added to the original building that ruined its architectural unity.

One morning as I left the hotel, a middle-aged man with a black umbrella and a medium-clean dhoti said to me, 'Come with me.' His teeth were stained with betel, but I thought to myself, 'Why not?' and so I went with him. I don't know whether he recognised in me a man with a taste for the unusual and the bizarre, but if so he was a man of sound judgement. As for me, I guessed that he was odd rather than bad, and I proved to be right as well. more>>>

One Good Dalrymple does not deserve a Bad One, even if only to dissect him, but it's pleasant to see William "Okkidental" Dalrymple dismembered by Theodore "Occidental" Dalrymple.

Wonderful essay. For a while there, I felt like I was reading an old Anthony Daniels travel book.

Question of the day: how much terrorism would exist if Westerners were unqualified in their condemnation of it?

This is a very good piece; it got me to re-read  "On the Bali Bombing" from Clive James.

It does not surprise me whenever terrorists turn out to come from good middle-class families. At a certain age I was dreaming that I could join in some grand cause and take on all World's injustice at once (and hopefully make name for myself in a spectacular way). Jihadist teachings can be pretty attractive to a serious young man.

I really wonder how western thinkers dare to write artical s with very few information.First terrorists who attacked on Mubmai are not educated, they came from poor family and out cast from their family some are thief, doing sundry job.

Why they attacking agian again on India because they know Indians are soft people , there is functional anarchy in India,no one care about justice,Even Rajiv Gandhi`s victim had not get  punishment. Abdul Guru who attacked on Indian Parlment and court punished  hang him , from past ten year no one punished him. because some Muslim leader s warned government of India that  donot hang to Guru.Government of India rule d on nation as caretaker not administer.Pakishan konw well psyche of Indian people that is why donot afraid abit.
