I remember as a child asking my grandparents how it felt in the lead up to WWII. Didn't it feel hopeless, or terrifying, seeing the signs that a terrible war was coming, that so much unimaginable agony was just around the corner? And that, as a mere citizen, the destruction was unavoidable, there was no way to prevent it?
I wonder what my grandchildren will be asking me.
