Turkey, Secularism and the Need for Eternal Vigilance

Stop Turkey

I feel that the Turkish military are holding back because they realise that negotiations with the European Union are at a critical stage. Military intervention would signal the end of the EU accession process. But a prolonged accession process (even some pro-Turk European politicians are now talking about decades) simply lengthens the period in which the military will feel unable to act, and during this time the Islamification agenda may advance dangerously far.

That's why the biggest favour Europe can do for the secularists in Turkey is to give a quick "No" to their application to join the EU. Then the military will have a free hand again.

You may be interested in the results of a recent opinion poll survey that shows the true feelings of Turkey's non-secular class. I reported the results in my blog here.

Even though the following estimate about the thinking of the post-election German political elite in the 'Telegraph' is encouraging, it could well be a short-lived political alliance:
