Key UAF leaders still in police custody
See where I will trawl so you don’t have to, gentle reader.
According to Socialist Worker on line, who claim today as a victory in Bolton, most of their number arrested today have been released after payment of fixed penalty fines (£80 which is the going rate for the least serious criminal damage) but some UAF leaders are still being held.
They claim that their ‘victory’ was won after the arrival of:-
large numbers of young Asians from the town. Shafiq told Socialist Worker, “The police tried to stop us getting here by holding us in a side road for hours. Several times we tried to break through their lines, but they held us back. Everyone cheered when we finally got into the Square. Its disgusting that the police have allowed the EDL to do what ever they like here, but we’ve been stopped from defending our own town.”
A young Asian man, who cannot be named, told Socialist Worker that police and members of the Bolton Council of Mosques (BCM) had tried to stop them going to the demo.
“We were stopped four times,” he said. “It was always a cop with two members of the BCM. I don’t see why the BCM are doing this. They are not the voice of all Muslims. We've had police visits to the Mosques and schools – even the primary schools. My young niece came home on Thursday terrified saying it wasn't safe to go into town because EDL were out to get her."
There is no way I can imagine the men and women of the EDL that I have met frightening a child. Or threatening a woman come to that. I sometimes wonder if the reason young women are thrust to the front of the UAF lines is that they know that the EDL, like the British Army in Afghanistan will respect women and children.
The UAF/SWP also claim that the police were biased against them in favour of the EDL. They said the same about the London rally to welcome Geert Wilders.

Update from the Bolton News

Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan, who was the Gold Commander, said: "Today in Bolton we have seen some small evidence of this protest in the form of flag waving and vitriolic name calling - but we have also seen groups of people, predominantly associated with the UAF, engaging in violent confrontation. It is clear to me that a large number have attended today with the sole intention of committing disorder and their actions have been wholly unacceptable. Turning their anger onto police officers they acted with, at times, extreme violence and their actions led to injuries to police officers, protestors and members of the public.

"The police are not and should not be the target of such violence and anger and this protest and the actions of some of the protestors is roundly condemned by GMP and by Bolton Council. Were it not for the professionalism and bravery of police officers many others would have been seriously injured. I would also like to praise the efforts of the EDL stewards who worked with us in the face of some very ugly confrontations."

Joe Bloggs

In your earlier report you did not mention the smear campaign against the EDL by the media, UAF and Bolton Council.  EDL was portrayed as a group of violent racists intent on rioting.  The people of Bolton were scared into not coming to hear the speeches by the EDL - one of the EDL speakers was a pakistani ex-muslim, another was a sikh.

The UAF were in Bolton for days leading up to the EDL demo.  They were leafletting on the streets and saying that an army of Nazis was visiting Bolton.  On the day before the demo the fire alarms in the Town Hall were set off twice.  When the staff streamed out, the UAF were standing outside to hand them leaflets.  Coincidence?

On the day of the demo, rumours flew round people in Bolton saying that 3 or 4 mosques had been petrol-bombed, and that 4 muslims had been stabbed.  These were again all lies spread by the UAF.  And that has totally misfired - if there is another demo in Bolton there will be thousands of people from Bolton who will come out to hear what the EDL has to say.  They're not going to be fooled by the UAF lies a second time.

I'm so relieved that the police are finally starting to deal with the UAF and their tactics of inciting violent disorder.  I personally have stood near them at demos and heard them say "we are hoping there is a riot".  They have no concern for anybody (muslim or non-muslim).  They just want to foment violent disorder.

The EDL has highlighted in past demos that gay people will be in the forefront of the targets for Sharia Law.  Now the EDL has it's own LGBT Division, which had 100 members within 2 weeks of being formed.

On the Bolton demo we found local lesbians and gay men who had come on to the demo without being members of EDL and without even knowing the EDL had a gay division.

Thank you Joe. I was hoping for some eye witness reports from those who were there and am thus much obliged to you.

The desire of the UAF to foment trouble was obvious even from their report in Socialist Worker on Friday about what turned out to be a local car thief breaking into a parked car.  They made out that a gang of racists had attacked the Mosque 'with knives'. Not the ideal tool to use on a stone/brick building. A brick cutter or a demolition ball would be more the thing.

Do they think we are stupid?
