When the first signs of the "Arab Spring" appeared in Tunisia, I recalled how Hugh Fitzgerald had written that reform in Islamic countries had historically been a top-down phenomenon, like Kemalism. But what was happening then was a bottom-up thing, meaning that the outcome would probably be reactionary.
I penned my thoughts to the Jerusalem Post in a letter, correctly predicting that an Iran-like fundamentalism would most likely sweep the region.
Meanwhile, Tom Friedman got the whole thing wrong, despite his being a big shot, and my being a hound dog.
Apparently, truth doesn't care about a resume.

This generative -- not grammar but chatter -- that gives you these variant conceivable vaporings of the icomical and intolerable friedman, has made my day, and provided a Christmas cheer that until now had eluded me. Bravo to those responsible. Why doesn't the NYT save money by buying the rights to their friedman-generator and firing the redundant original?
