I get back papers from one of my classes this morning.  The theme is "foresight"  (they had to consult their dictionaries).  I didn't explain but gave them this Shaw quote to help them along through the fog:

"At nineteen I did not throw myself into the struggle for life, I threw my mother."

Cruel?  I think not.
