Advent Calendar 24th December

Father Christmas has just left Mogadishu in Somalia. A place that needs some of the peace and goodwill of Christmas, did they but know it. You can track him courtesy of NORAD here.

Meanwhile in 19th century London, as re-created in Chester Cathedral’s Christmas exhibition, the ghost of Christmas Present continues to frighten the bejebbers out of Ebenezeer Scrooge.

  1. I think that not ‘Father Christmas’ but Saint Nicholas probably did visit some people in Somalia, some very special people.
He would not, however, have left physical gift-wrapped parcels (though it’s possible that, by way of bodies such as Barnabas Fund and Open Doors and Voice of the Martyrs, some physical tokens of the support of the Church Universal might have somehow made a way to them).
Instead, Saint Nicholas Bishop of Myra would have quietly entered the homes of the bravest of the brave, Somalia’s hidden Christians, most of them apostates from Islam who risk their lives every day by their decision to believe in Jesus; and he would laid his hands on them as they slept, and given them a bishop’s blessing, praying for them to be strengthened in their service of the Lord.
