Partisan Review—PR. 3 Orwell was seriously wounded and Koestler was eventually freed in a prisoner-of-war exchange, after a grueling three months on death row in a Franco Nationalist prison. Thus their “take” on communism carried more weight than the demagogic anti-communism of Senator Joseph McCarthy. Ironically it swept up in his hysteria-driven net, liberals, and even more than a few innocent members of church-affiliated groups.
