There Were Menacing Monsters Under My Bed
by Armando Simón (October 2025)

–
Without a choice a child changes into
Manhood and many little marvels are lost.
Such as spooky tales so sinister they
Enticed us kids expecting a terrifying entity.
Menacing monsters were moving under my bed.
–
Horror movies about hellfiends were a hit.
Nighttime viewing best for nasty nightmares as
I imagined suspicious sounds and slithering shadows
From far corners seeming to come closer.
Menacing monsters were moving under my bed.
–
Best time to watch television was Late
Late Show with Lugosi’s minion lurking about
As I anxiously huddled against my aunt
Spilling popcorn while peering at Vincent Price.
Menacing monsters were moving under my bed!
–
Undead Dracula was cool, dreaded in Transylvania.
Frankenstein was fierce, afraid only of fire.
The wily Wolfman went after helpless women.
Meanwhile the mute Mummy emerged from pyramids.
Menacing monsters were moving under my bed!!
–
Peter Lorre, Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee left
Me trembling with taut nerves totally terrified.
I was afraid of Fiend Without a Face.
Flying saucers flew so fast they vanished!
Menacing monsters were moving under my bed!!!
