Late again. I thought that the popularity of It's a Wonderful Life was that it was a post war celebration of optimism. But I now read that it wasn't instantly popular or an immediate box office success. It's popularity and reputation was something that grew steadiliy over the years. Maybe it was the uncertanty of the cold war years that made people appreciate being reminded that quiet duty, responsibility and kindness are Good Things.
And they remain Good Things today.
