London Bridge attack: ‘Gunfire and explosions’ heard as police raid two houses in east London

From the London Evening Standard

Police raided two more houses in east London on Monday morning in connection with the horrific London Bridge terror attack that left seven people dead.

Neighbours awoke to the sound of “gunfire and explosions” as counter-terrorism officers entered homes in Newham and Dagenham at 4.15am. (Some newspapers say Barking – but even if you live there, as I did, it’s hard to remember which street is the last in Barking, and which the first in Dagenham)

The Met said “a number of people” were detained and were being interviewed by detectives. Pictures posted on social media showed heavily armed police and an unmarked black van near to the A13 in Dagenham.

Officers were searching both houses following the dawn raids, a spokesman added.

Residents reported hearing “loud flash bangs and gunshots” in the early hours of Monday morning. Twitter user BatemanLDN said: “It woke me up along with the whole street. Extremely loud bangs followed by gunshot bangs.

A Met spokesman said on Monday morning: “At around 04:15hrs on Monday, 5 June, officers from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command investigating the London Bridge terror attack entered two further addresses – one in Newham and another in Barking. A number of people have been detained and are at present being spoken to.”
