The Trump Administration faces compelling issues in the roiling Middle East upon inauguration on January 21, 2017. Many of these involve allies in the region like Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf emirates.   1. Always a pleasure to read Shoshana's take on the Middle East. I might add two thoughts about the Russians. First, if the Kremlin is sympathetic to a Kurdish state, it is on the "right side of history." If we truely believe in Muslim "moderation," the Kurds are the Ummah role model. A second point concerns national sovreignty.  Russian pushback in Syria is motivated by the same democratic imperialism that motivates pushback against NATO in Europe. Why wouldn't any rational state, Russia included, resist arbitrary, if not arrogant, policies like "regime change." Sedition justified in the name "humanitarian" motive is no longer a slippery slope; it's a probative littany of fiasco.
