Mosque linked to school Quran row investigated by watchdog

I posted yesterday that the Free Speech Union had asked the Charity’s Commission to look at the behaviour of the Jamia Masjid Swafia mosque in Wakefield around the handling of the schoolboy who dropped his copy of the koran and by doing so scuffed the cover, and in particular the remarks of the Imam, one Hafiz Muhammad Mateen Anwar.

Today The Times reports that:

A Charity Commission spokeswoman said: “We have opened a regulatory compliance case to assess concerns raised with us about Jamia Masjid Swafia. We are carefully considering the issues raised to determine our next steps.” If it believes there are grounds for further investigation, it could begin a statutory inquiry.

The mosque did not respond to a request for comment.

I’m glad the Charity Commission has taken this seriously enough to open a case.
