Someone I know from NIger, who lives in France, who is vaguely Muslim, was horrified by  what he saw when he returned to Niger, after years of absence, about three years ago. The Saudi-financed mosques had transformed, he said, what he remembered as an easygoing Islam, far from the Arabs, and turned it into the real, undiluted thing. And it is that — the Real Islam — that explains the hysteria and hate in that country today.
