A man attacked passengers with a knife at a train station in the Munich area in southern Germany early on Tuesday, leaving one man dead and three people with life-threatening injuries, Bavarian radio reported.

It is believed the 27-year-old suspect, who was arrested at the scene, had used a knife with a 10cm blade.

Police were checking witness statements that the man shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is Great) during the attack, Bayerischer Rundfunk reported.

“The assailant made remarks at the scene of the crime that indicate a political motivation – apparently an Islamist motive. We are still determining what the exact remarks were,” a spokesman for the investigation said.

A police spokesman on the scene told broadcaster n-tv that the attacker had shouted “political statements” during the attack, but refused to comment on their nature.

Sky’s Mark Stone said: “It is not confirmed as being a terror attack at this stage. According to the local mayor, the man apprehended is a German national. The police and the authorities are looking into links to Islamist terrorism. It’s a reminder of how authorities need to be able to deal with this situation.”

The attack took place in the S-Bahn commuter train station at Grafing, a town about 32 km (20 miles) southeast of the Bavarian capital in southern Germany.
