One of the gunmen identified as Naveed Akram – Shooting declared terrorist incident

A senior law enforcement official has confirmed that one of the gunmen was Naveed Akram from Bonnyrigg in Sydney’s south-west.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the shooter’s home in Bonnyrigg was currently being raided by police.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon says 29 people were injured, including two police officers, who are in a serious condition.

“We know that there were many people there to celebrate a happy occasion — the celebration of Hanukkah. And there was well over 1,000 people there when this took place. As a result of the circumstances of the incident tonight, at 9:36pm this evening, I declared this to be a terrorist incident.”

He told reporters: “Could I ask that this is a time of calm. This is a time where I want to make sure that there is no retribution. The police are investigating thoroughly. We have acted promptly. We have taken decisive action. Could I just ask for calm in the community, allow the police to do our job.”

The Australian Federal Police say they are working with NSW police and ASIO in join counter-terrorism arrangements.

Shortly after the shooting occured, police located a vehicle in Campbell Parade at Bondi which they believed had several improvised explosive devices.

“We have our rescue bomb disposal unit there at the moment working on that,” Commissioner Lanyon says.

ABC reporter Digby Werthmuller confirms police are concerned about a possible explosive device they’ve found under the footbridge the shooters were filmed firing from.

NSW Premier Chris Minns says 12 people have been killed. . . Minns says it was a targeted attack on the Jewish community.
