Dorothy Parker, writing for the New Yorker when it was notoriously penny-pinching, when asked why she turned in an article late, replied, “Someone was using the office pencil.”

  1. A memo circulated by a senior moron in the Tax Dep’t I used to work for, during an imaginary “budget crunch”, said this.
“There’s no money in the budget for new business cards. We have a supply of blank ones so we suggest you use these and just write your name and phone number on them.”
Shortly afterwards they advised us that there was money in the budget for overtime and we could all work as many hours as we wanted.
You can’t make this stuff up!
