Reports: Police nab ‘man in hat’ in Brussels video

USA Today:

Belgian authorities believe that a man arrested standing near the federal prosecutors office is the long-sought “man in the hat” — the third terrorist shown on surveillance video at Brussels airport minutes before Tuesday attack.

The man is identified as Faisal Cheffou, according to the Belgian state TV and the newspaper Le Soir.

He was identified, according to Belgian media, by a taxi driver who earlier led police to the house in a Brussels district where he picked up three men, including two of the suicide bombers, who blew themselves up at the airport in the terror attacks Tuesday that killed at least 31 people.

The third terrorist, wearing a hat and light clothing shown on the right, is shown walking beside the two others terrorists. Authorities said the third man was pushing a cart with luggage containing a 35-pound bomb that did not detonate. The man fled and has been the main target of a manhunt since the attacks.

The Belgian media said Cheffou was among a group of people detained in central Brussels on Thursday. Erc Van Dere Sypt, a spokesman for the prosecutors’ office, has not officially confirmed that Cheffou was among the the group, only that three people were detained while standing :outside our door.”

Prosecutors are awaiting DNA evidence before stating officially that the man is custody is the “third terrorist” suspect, RTDF, Belgian state TV, reports.

The federal prosecutor’s office said in a statement on Saturday that an arrest warrant has been issued for a man only identified as Faycal C.

The statement said he is wanted for “involvement in a terrorist group, terrorist killings and attempted terrorist killings,” the Associated Press reports. The authorities did not indicate if the individual is already in custody.
