Sir David Amess dies: Somalian man, 25, arrested on suspicion of stabbing MP to death – latest news

Police have arrested a 25-year-old Somalian man on suspicion of murdering the Conservative MP Sir David Amess, who was stabbed multiple times at his constituency surgery.

Essex Police said a 25-year-old man had been arrested, and officers were not looking for anybody else in connection with the incident.

It is understood the man being held on suspicion of murder is of Somalian origin. A witness who described seeing him being taken away by the police said he was calm and compliant.

Security sources confirmed that the suspect was believed to be a Somalian, but police were still seeking to establish a motive for the attack.

Friday afternoon. Three mosques a short bus ride away in Westcliff. A Christian church. It isn’t going to be Sir David’s support of the Prost8 charity that justified his fate. 

Counterterrorism police are investigating possible links between Islamist extremists and (the) knifeman. The source said the knifeman did not use phrases often associated with an Islamist attacks to indicate a terrorist motivation. Police will examine his telephone to establish if there are links to extremism.
