Somali woman ‘with 11 husbands’ stoned to death by al Shabaab

From the Kenya Star

A woman has been stoned to death in Somalia after a court run by al Shabaab convicted her of having several husbands, the militant group says. Shukri Abdullahi Warsame was accused of marrying 11 times, without divorcing her previous husbands.

She was buried neck-deep and pelted to death with stones by al Shabaab fighters, say residents of the southern Sablale town. Mohamed Abu Usama, al Shabaab’s governor for the Lower Shabelle region, told Reuters: “Shukri Abdullahi and nine husbands, including her legal husband, were brought at the court, each saying she was his wife.”

According to local newspaper Garowe, Shukri Abdullahi Warsame was aged 30 and the mother of eight children.  An al shabaab judge said she was found guilty of marrying eleven husbands, one had divorced her, another had died, but she has been the wife of nine men.

“Shukri Abdullahi has confessed to having illegally married 11 at once without divorce and subsequently the court sentenced her to stone to death for adultery” said the self-proclaimed judge.

Al Shabaab acted after two of the men came to blows over her, each claiming to be her legal husband, and they brought the case to court. She was executed in the public square of Sablale district of Lower Shabelle region in the presence of many local residents.
