Something that isn’t an ugly duckling

The story of the Ugly Duckling has a good moral, and made a great song for Danny Kaye (I’m a fan) but I never quite understood the ‘ugly’ bit. Cygnets are adorable. In their cygnet way, which is not that of a duckling. Or a gosling.
