Something traditional Day 2

Bands, be they brass or silver, are still a feature of many northern English towns. Many formed under a colliery or factory. The Grimethorpe Colliery band formed in 1917 and are generally considered to be one of the best.

This is them playing the William Tell overture.

As one of the comments to the Youtube source says “You know you’re an intellectual when you hear The William Tell Overture and you don’t think of the Lone Ranger.”

Grimethorpe is in Yorkshire. The film Brassed Off in which the real band played throughout alongside the actors (I don’t know how much they mimed the instruments) is largely their story of how they fought unsuccessfully to save their colliery from being closed down, which devastated the community but the band continued.
