Sri Lankan air force defuse bomb near airport

Colombo (News1st) – An Improvised explosive device (IED) which was discovered in close proximity to the Bandaranayake International Airport has been sucessfully diffused by the Sri Lanka Airforce.

Airforce spokesperson, Group Captain Gihan Seneviratne noted that the IED was located when a suspicious package found along the Aadiambalama road. He added that the IED is believed to be locally manufactured.

“A PVC pipe which was six feet in length containing explosives in it was discovered,” Air Force Spokesman Gihan Seneviratne told Times Online.

Mr Seneviratne told the publication the explosive device was discovered by Air Force personnel on a mobile patrol and was disposed of by the Explosives Ordinance Disposal Unit of the Air Force in a controlled area.
