USAF memorial window in Chelmsford Cathedral

I was in Chelmsford today and thought our US readers with an interest in WWII history would like to see a photograph of the memorial stain glass window commemorating the friendship between the people of Essex and the US Airmen and women stationed in our county 1942-45.

It was installed in 1953. I even found a bit of Pathe News showing the unveiling by Field Marshal Montgomery with speech and prayers by the Bishop and clergy.

Chelmsford City centre is much changed since I was a student in 1972, but the immediate surroundings of the cathedral in 1953 didn’t look any different this morning.  Just sunny and in colour.
