I want to apologize for my actions. I should not have been drinking and trying to enter bars illegally. I should not have caused a scene when asked to leave. I should not have cursed the police officers who were just doing their job. It’s my own fault I have this gash in my head. Had I been respectful of authority and not been drinking illegally, this would not have happened.
I brought my school into disrespect by my unruly actions and I beg the forgiveness of school authorities and humbly ask that I may be given another chance and not be expelled as I deserve.
I throw myself on the mercy of the court. I have learned my lesson, but will take my punishment like a man.
God bless the University of Virginia, the state of Virginia and the United States of America.

Edgar Allan Poe left the University of Virginia, because of gambling debts he incurred that he could not, and the relative supporting him would not, pay. At least, that is the story I was told when being shown around The Lawn at the university some years ago, and where I was informed that three distinguished alumni or, in Poe’s case, brief attendees, had had rooms in that beautiful building where now, it seems, only the most privileged of seniors are permitted to lodge. The three whose names were proudly listed were 1) Edgar Allan Poe 2) Woodrow Wilson and 3) Katy Couric. And while I whispered it to myself, it was hard not to say the word aloud: Nevermore.
