Anjem Choudary to be subjected to most stringent living conditions ever placed on a British citizen

Choudary, 51, becomes eligible for release on Wednesday, The Sunday Telegraph has learnt, after serving half his sentence for a terrorist offence. This newspaper has been told he will most likely be released on Thursday or Friday. . .  with time spent on remand he is eligible for release on licence from Wednesday despite ministers admitting he remains “genuinely dangerous”.

Ministers are steeling themselves for a public outcry . . .They have admitted that they were powerless to halt his release, despite Prisons Minister Rory Stewart branding him ‘a deeply pernicious, destabilising influence’ and ‘a genuinely dangerous person’.

Taxpayers will fund a huge security operation to monitor his movements and make sure he is abiding by some 25 separate conditions on his conduct while out on licence. The bill for the monitoring and security operation of Choudary, also a target for right wing extremists, is likely to exceed £2 million a year.

Documents seen by the Telegraph suggest Choudary will have to adhere to about 25 carefully drafted rules, intended to control every aspect of his daily life.

A well placed source said: “The rules will be so restrictive to prevent him having any contact with other extremists or vulnerable young men and women.”

Authorities are deeply concerned that Choudary, the leader of the banned terrorist organisation al-Muhajiroun, will re-exert influence on hundreds of followers upon release. . . Choudary has been linked to at least 15 terror plots since 2000 and there is mounting concern that his release will inspire a new generation of extremists.

Why was he not tried for treason, and given a whole life sentence? 

The well placed source: “These are probably the most stringent conditions ever drafted for a prisoner being released on licence and any breach whatsoever will be enough to see him returned to prison.”

But after a diplomatic push led by Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, UN Security Council powers will be used to hit Choudary with an asset freeze and travel ban – and even force him to be subject to its ‘arms embargo provisions’. The move, carried out with the close co-operation of French President Emmanuel Macron’s government, means that each UN member state is legally obliged to freeze his financial assets, prevent him from entering their countries and stop any weapons reaching him.

But his early release has also created a headache for the authorities who will be forced to mount a huge security operation to keep him safe from attack by far-right extremists.

Choudary is likely to be moved from HMP Frankland in Durham to a prison in north London ahead of his final release later this week. He will then be taken to a halfway house in the capital where he will spend several weeks being assessed before being allowed to return to his family home.

Given the threat to his safety at the hands of far right extremists, Choudary, his wife and his five children are expected to be moved out of their council property to a new location. How about charging her with terrorist activities, and on conviction stripping her of her British citizenship and removing her and their (well grown) children back to Pakistan? 

London boroughs have reciprocal agreements that allow them to rehouse families in new properties at short notice. They are often used to rehouse and protect victims of domestic violence, but sources said the Choudary family could also be eligible for a move.

About a dozen followers will soon follow Choudary out of prison while his right-hand man, Mizanur Rahman, will also be released halfway through his sentence. Counter-terrorism experts have warned that al-Muhajiroun could reform.

A senior Government source said of the UN action against Choudary: ‘This is a great coup for Jeremy and for Britain and shows we are serious about taking all necessary action to destroy Islamic State and its tentacles around the globe.
