At least one person was killed and several injured in Berlin on Saturday night after a car drove into a crowd of people at the city’s Gay Pride festival.
German police are hunting the driver of a white vehicle which onlookers say crashed into a group of people at the event at around 10pm at high speed.
It is understood the driver left the car after the collision, which occurred at Berlin’s Tiergarten park, before fleeing the scene on foot.
According to Bild tabloid, the driver of the vehicle allegedly attacked people with a bladed weapon after getting out.
He then fled the scene and remains at large.
A photograph of the vehicle involved in the collision showed what appeared to be a white van with a heavily damaged bonnet.
There was no immediate confirmation from German authorities as to whether the incident was terror-related.
A Berlin senator has urged against speculating about the incident as he said that it “didn’t happen” at the Gay Pride event itself. Christian Gaebler, Berlin’s Senator for Urban Development from the Social Democrats [SPD] party, said it was too early to say if there was a motive behind the incident.
Kai Wegner, the outgoing mayor of Berlin, has described the incident as an “attack” on Germany’s “free and open society”.
Earlier on Saturday, hundreds of thousands of people took part in the event, called Christopher Street Day in Germany.
The march ended on 17 June Street, which crosses Berlin’s Tiergarten to the Brandenburg Gate, which has been the venue for concerts since Friday.
The incident occurred at around 10pm and the Pride event was called off approximately 15 minutes later.
According to German media, a band had been playing on the stage when news spread of the collision and the performance was interrupted.
Revellers were told to “go home” and avoid taking routes through the Tiergarten park, where the collision occurred.
