Breaking: Author Salman Rushdie attacked on lecture stage in New York

Joshua Goodman writes in AP:

CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. (AP) — Salman Rushdie, the author whose writing led to death threats from Iran in the 1980s, was attacked Friday as he was about to give a lecture in western New York.

An Associated Press reporter witnessed a man storm the stage at the Chautauqua Institution and begin punching or stabbing Rushdie as he was being introduced. The author was taken or fell to the floor, and the man was restrained.

Rushdie’s condition was not immediately known.

Rushdie’s book “The Satanic Verses” has been banned in Iran since 1988, as many Muslims consider it to be blasphemous. A year later, Iran’s late leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, or edict, calling for Rushdie’s death.

A bounty of over $3 million has also been offered for anyone who kills Rushdie.

Iran’s government has long since distanced itself from Khomeini’s decree, but anti-Rushdie sentiment lingered. In 2012, a semi-official Iranian religious foundation raised the bounty for Rushdie from $2.8 million to $3.3 million.

Rushdie dismissed that threat at the time, saying there was “no evidence” of people being interested in the reward.

That year, Rushdie published a memoir, “Joseph Anton,” about the fatwa.

(He was stabbed at least twice and reports this morning say he may lose and eye.)

The Guardian: Salman Rushdie is on ventilator and may lose an eye after attack, agent says

CNN: The suspect was identified as Hadi Matar, 24, from Fairview, New Jersey, State Police Troop Commander Major Eugene J. Staniszewski said in a Friday evening news conference. Police said they are working with the FBI and local authorities to determine what could have motivated the attack.

(What could it be?…What could it be?)

  1. Well, once the identity of the attacker is revealed, I guess we should get ready for yet another round of “it is not Islam, but the perversion of Islam that’s at fault.” Or, from even wiser types, “he should have kept his mouth shut.” I wish Rushdie a speedy recovery — and America and the world, not being afraid of free discussion/debunking of Islamism — free, that is, from the shackles of political correctness.

  2. It happened on FRIDAY. On a Friday. No surprise at all. And I’d bet my boots the attacker is a mohammedan mobster, seeking to apply the orthodox sharia punishment for “blasphemy” and/or apostasy: death. I do hope Rushdie recovers.
