Charlie Hebdo today: Islam the Religion of Peace – eternal peace.

The cover of today’s edition of Charlie Hebdo isn’t going to go down well in some quarters.

Al Jazeera isn’t impressed and they have copied the tweet-tweet comments of all manner of writers for the Guardian and similar.

We were expecting it. Another Charlie Hebdo cover to incite anti-Muslim hatred #nausea

…prominent Socialist MP and former minister Stephane Le Foll called it “extremely dangerous”. “When you’re a journalist you need to exercise restraint because making these associations can be used by other people,” he said.

It’s not in the best possible taste, as Cupid Stunt always said, , but then satire never is – thats the point.

  1. The thought is by no means original. The extraordinary reversal of reality involved in taking the Religion of Blood and War (which is what Churchill called it, back in the 1890s) and trying to rebrand it as “the religion of peace”, is so brazen, so counterfactual, as to invite satire from anyone with a functioning brain.
Among many Islamosavvy English speakers, of course, the pun between ‘peace’ and ‘piece’ has, in the aftermath of stabbings, mutilations, beheadings and, most particularly, bombings, been much repeated – that is, the slogan ‘religion of peace’ has become ‘religion of pieces’.
