Hospital suspends consultant who stopped surgeon operating while wearing headscarf

From the Telegraph and The Sun. It is notable that Czechs and Slovakians in general and the Czech president in particular are being very vocal in their concerns that they do not want the Czech Republic and Slovakia to suffer the Islamisation they see in other European countries. I imagine his recent blog posts about his experiences in England are written with that in mind.

Vladislav Rogozov is being investigated by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals’ NHS Trust after going public with concerns on blog.

Dr Vladislav Rogozov said in a blog that he confronted her as they scrubbed up when he realised she planned to keep the Islamic scarf on during surgery.

He claimed the hijab was spotted with blood from previous operations. But she refused to remove it and walked out, She later left the hospital after an investigation backed Dr Rogozov for enforcing the strict dress code.

The incident, in 2013, was not made public. However, Dr Rogozov, was suspended last month after revealing the episode – and other surgeons’ more recent behaviour – on a Czech blog.

He said: “I came into the operating room, where I met the surgeon, a woman shrouded in a Muslim headscarf. I immediately stopped the operation of the hall and asked her to put down her scarf and replace it with the prescribed headgear. After a long discussion held with respect, decency and factual arguments, the surgeon refused and left the operating room. We managed to subsequently find another surgeon who performed the operation.

“After the end of the operating day other members of the surgical team came to me (in a low voice and with the door closed) to share their concerns about the threat to patient safety.

“If the medics in a developed country are afraid to draw attention to threats to patient safety because of accusations of racism, then it is an example of the absurdity of multiculturalism,”

….he claims other medics had been concerned about the breach of health rules but feared speaking out. “No one dared to highlight this issue because they feared being accused of racism.”

Dr Rogozov also claimed Muslim staff took unscheduled prayer breaks during surgery and alleged a male doctor had recited from the Koran during an operation. I don’t personally have a problem with prayer for the general good in such circumstances. Christian prayer has now been all but eradicated in the NHS but I am old enough to remember the amazing work done in the East End by the Mildmay Mission hospital where staff had no hesitation in praying with and for any patient who wanted and needed it.

A source said: “Dr Rogozov won’t tolerate anything that puts patients at risk. It has nothing to do with the medics being Muslims. It’s his fear they let their beliefs come before the patients.”

Dr David Throssell, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals’ spokesman, said: “The member of staff has not been excluded from work for raising patient safety issues as we take these very seriously. However since the publication of articles, attributed to the member of staff, we have received concerns about the tone he has used. On this basis the content and nature of the views published are currently being investigated.”

Dr Rogozov comes from indomitable stock (look up his father, also a Dr Rogozov) – I doubt he will be easily intimidated.
