If memory serves there were at least three terror attacks which were purposefully not classified as terror in order to keep up the illusion that we hadn’t had another terror attack under Bush. The beltway snipers were tied to Islam, but this fact was downplayed at the time, though the trial definitely revealed they were motivated by jihad.

The second one was in 2006 when Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar rented an SUV and ran into a crowd of students at UNC. Taheri-azar wrote letters to the student paper outlining his motives in Qur’anic chapter and verse. In one letter he wrote, “I was aiming to follow in the footsteps of one of my role models, Mohamed Atta, one of the 9/11 hijackers, who obtained a doctorate degree.”

The third was the Seattle Jewish Center shooting also in 2006.

In all three cases, there was official denial of any “ties to terrorism.” Today, these would be catagorized as “lone wolf” jihad attacks. There were also several instances of honor killings. See the list here.
