Leipzig: Two killed after car drives into crowd

From  Deutsche Welle

At least two people were killed injured after a car drove through a crowd in the eastern German city of Leipzig, authorities said.

However, state broadcaster MDR later reported that police revised the death toll down to one, leding to conflicting reports.

Several other people were injured, police said.

The incident occurred close to St Nicholas Church and the University of Leipzig in the city center. Police blocked off Grimmaische Street, a shopping street that connects these landmarks with Leipzig’s market square.

German tabloid Bild reported that the vehicle, a VW Taigo, had been traveling at a high speed.

Bild also reported that the driver stopped eventually, was arrested and the public are not longer in danger. Google auto translate used the term “psychologically conspicuous” to describe the driver’s state as he was arrested. I have no idea what that means, but suspect a ‘mental health issue’ will be suggested as reason for the attack.

Police said the suspect was a 33-year-old German male.
