Keir Starmer reminds me of an old Union President we used to have ( I’ve written about him before). Absolutely useless in everything he did except for public speaking and his ability to speak French (not, I am quick to add, because he studied French… he couldn’t study anything but the “racing form”)…. but that he grew up on an island where it was the lingua franca)
He was useless at his job, useless as president and useless at managing his financial affairs but he revelled in the power that the position gave him……and he was good at power brokerage.
All through his tenure he gave out perks to his buddies, buddies who were crafty and usually the only ones left at the AGM’s when it came to voting time.
He almost always won with the vote of the 20 people he stacked the deck with. 20 people from a membership of about 2000 . So to do the math, he was elected by 1% of the eligible voters
If that sounds eerily familiar to the election of the Labour Party, it’s because it’s structural throughout so-called democracy. What kept him in power above and beyond the favours he handed out, was the possibility of electing one of his even more incompetent, venal cementhead friends.
As it often happens, one of them eventually got in, …..only because the incumbent was eventually fired from his government job. Believe it or not, he wanted to remain as President of the Union even though he no longer worked there…. and hired one of the Union’s lawyers, at Union cost, to pursue his case.
The replacement was dumber than a bag of hammers, adding 1 plus 1 was advanced arithmetic for her, much to the delight of Management who had her wrapped around their fingers.
So we are right to be fearful of replacement appointed in panic (viz: Kamala Harris) and we should be wary of any image lacquered onto them.
I saw a fawning interview with Rachel Reeves a while back, obviously stage managed , where she said that she’d wanted to be Chancellor of the Exchequer for as long as she could remember. A shambolic disaster.
What sort of person has ambitions like that? They must know from their political backgrounds that these positions are just figurehead appointments.
I would say.. get out and vote, and vote these vengeful incompetents out. It’s not going to change much, as Mr Dalrymple says, but it will send a message that the voters will eventually react to total failure.
