Music for Saint Valentine’s Day: II

Don Williams: We’ve Got a Good Fire Going.

A sweet and thoughtful and intensely erotic song that in its contrast between the warmth and light and fire of love, and the storm and the hard rain falling outside, seems to me to contain more than an echo of the Song of Songs passage I posted earlier today.

“There’s a storm rollin’ over the hill,

and the willow trees are blowin’,

I’m standin’ here starin’ out the window

Safe and warm.

I feel her put her arms around me,

and it’s a good feelin’ I’m knowin’

Oh, I’ve got a good woman, and we’ve got a good fire going.

“We’ve got a feast on the supper table

And bread for breakin’

A blessing from the Lord

for makin’ me such a fortunate man.

The love of my life in the candle

Her face a-glowin’,

Oh, I’ve got a good woman, and we’ve got a good fire going.”

CHORUS

“So let it rain,

(let the rain fall down)

Let it rain.

It won’t do nothin’ but kindle

A never-ending flame.

Let it rain

Let the rain fall down,

let it rain till mornin’,

Oh I’ve got a good woman, and we’ve got a good fire going.

“Now there’s a hard rain fallin’ on the roof

Coffee comin’ from the kitchen.

I’m lyin’ here listenin’ to the ceiling

On the living room floor.

I feel her lay down beside me

My love is overflowin’

Oh, I’ve got a good woman

And we’ve got a good fire going.”

CHORUS.

And now, for a change of pace, funny and lively and down-to-earth, but no less passionately committed,  The Proclaimers performing  “Five Hundred Miles”.

“When I wake up yeah I know I’m gonna be

?I’m gonna be the man who wakes up next to you?

When I go out yeah I know I’m gonna be

?I’m gonna be the man who goes along with you

?If I get drunk yes I know I’m gonna be?

I’m gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you?

And if I haver yeah I know I’m gonna be

?I’m gonna be the man who’s havering to you??.

CHORUS

“But I would walk 500 miles?

And I would walk 500 more?

Just to be the man who walked a 1000 miles?

To fall down at your door.”

??”When I’m working yes I know I’m gonna be?

I’m gonna be the man who’s working hard for you?

And when the money comes in for the work I’ll do

?I’ll pass almost every penny on to you?

When I come home oh I know I’m gonna be

?I’m gonna be the man who comes back home to you?

And if I grow old well I know I’m gonna be

?I’m gonna be the man who’s growing old with you”.

CHORUS.

“da da da??da da da??da da da dum da da dum da da dum da da?da da da??da da da??da da da dum da da dum da da dum da da.”

??”When I’m lonely yes I know I’m gonna be

?I’m gonna be the man whose lonely without you

?When I’m dreaming well I know I’m gonna dream

?Dream about the time when I’m with you??

When I go out well I know I’m gonna be

?I’m gonna be the man who goes along with you?

And when I come home yes I know I’m gonna be

?I’m gonna be the man who comes back home to you

?I’m gonna be the man who’s coming home with you.”

“But I would walk 500 miles

?And I would walk 500 more

?Just to be the man who walked a 1000 miles?

To fall down at your door??

da da da??da da da??da da da dum da da dum da da dum da da?da da da??da da da??da da da dum da da dum da da dum da da?da da da??da da da??da da da dum da da dum da da dum da da?da da da??da da da??da da da dum da da dum da da dum da da

“??But I would walk 500 miles?

And I would walk 500 more?

Just to be the man who walked a 1000 miles

?To fall down at your door.”

Wishing a sweet and happy Saint Valentine’s Day to all our readers: those in the eastern hemisphere and “Down Under” who are already seeing the last of the day, and those in the western hemisphere for whom the day has just begun.

  1. I apologise: there appears to have been a mixup, and the Don Williams piece has not been included, whilst the Ofra Haza from a previous posting has gone in instead; the problem will be corrected presently, so please bear with us.

In the meantime, if you deploy google and run a search for “youtube Don Williams good fire going” you should be able to find and listen to the song and you will see, I hope, why I wanted to share it.

  2. As you can see, the problem has now been fixed and you can listen to Don Williams’ beautiful voice right here at NER.
