“We have too much profanity,” in the New Yorker, its editor complained in a memo to the magazine’s staff that I read the other day. “We had six ‘hells’ in one issue lately and probably a couple of ‘damns’ also.”
I should add that the memo was written in 1930. We’ve come a long way since then.

Clearly, the Depression Era wasn’t all bad.
